Question about Dewalt d55151 factory reconditioned emglo heavy - duty 2.5hp 4 gallon Electric hand carry compressor

1 Answer

Air coming out of the cold start valve

Dewalt 55151 type 3 compressor. Air is coming out of the middle of what appears to be the cold start valve - tank end of the curly tube. Not sure if is the valve that is bad or some other problem causing this condition. Valve is on tight.

I have a DeWalt Emglo portable single gallon tank 1.8 hp compressor. When I put it away in September all was good. We rolled it out today and it starts and sounds normal. It won't build up any pressure....

What you call the "Check valve" is really the over-pressure relief.

The real check valve is a one-way valve where the tubing from the compressor enters the tank. When it's working right it opens to allow each pulse of air from the compressor to enter the tank and closes as the compressor draws another gulp of air from the intake and gets ready to pulse it into the tank.

If it sticks open, the compressor will move the same pulse of air back and forth through the tubing and pressure in the tank will never increase.

The (real) check valve doesn't have anything to pull on. It looks like a brass straight or right-angle fitting and may have a third (small) tubing connection, besides the connections into the tank and from the compressor.

There's a good chance that the check valve is frozen from condensation and cold storage. It so, it will work fine when warmed up. If not, most of these can be taken apart and cleaned up.

Don't forget to open the tank drain valve (at the bottom) and drain the moisture out of the tank to prolong its life.

Air compressor not unloading

Check the pressure switch. The unloader valve is actually in the pressure switch where the small air line from the tank check valve attaches to it. When the pressure switch turns the motor off it then lets the head pressure bleed off so the motor can restart the next time pressure drops in the tank. If it's not working and bleeding off the head pressure the cold start valve (the one with the pin in it) also won't open so the motor can restart and warn up properly.

Hey there. I am having problems with my Emglo Dewalt d55151 compressor. I have taken it apart and and cleaned everything up. The reason I did all this was..because the cold start valve stays open and its...

The cold start valve will close when volume of air from compressor is sufficient to overcome spring under pin (allows the motor to come up to speed). Evidently your compressor is producing very little air. Usually the problem is leaking or broken reed valves or gaskets. Remove the head and look for torn/ leaking gaskets and replace as needed. Examing the reed valves and seats and look for broken cracked reeds or worn seats. Some of the valve plates used in Dewalt compressors are made of aluminum and would fail. Parts are available at www.toolpartsdirect.com or local dewalt service center. Good luck with your repair.

If you have oil coming out of the oil fill and dip stick you most likely installed the reed plate upside down. Usually it says this side up or there is an arrow pointing up on the reed plate.
This is a good sketch of compressor and reed valve assy.

Usually the reeds are on top of the plate facing downward. If you have just a reed disc.. then the disc will need to be inverted.

1 Answer

Dewalt 4 gal air compressor will not build pressure in take.

The bleed valve is an unloader of sorts that allows the compressor to start with-out a load. It closes when the pressure in the airline reaches about 20-25lbs with good volume. If air volume is not sufficient, the valve will not close. To solve the problem lets do a few tests. A long cord will reduce power and reduce air volume. Try powering the compressor with-out extension cord. If bleed valve closes when you do not use a cord, the compressor is not getting enough voltage, use shorter cord of the 12 gauge quality and more hose to reach work. If valve still does not close, check for air leaks on all fittings including around pressure switch and drain valve with soapy water. Repair as necessary and retest. If no leaks were found, temporarily plug bleed valve port with screw/bolt and run compressor till set pressure cut-off while counting minuites/seconds. The compressor should fill and shut off within three minutes or so. If it takes an unusually long time to fill, then the reed valves /valve plate is worn and leaking pressure back into cylinger. Leaking valves will usually result in very hot discharge airline/air. Reinstall the bleed valve after test. Parts and partslist are available at www.toolpartsdirect.com . Good luck on the repair and email if you have other questions.

Air Compressor

Dewalt recommends synthetic oil in their compressors. The dewlat part # 5130427-00 quart, and 5130702-00 for a 4oz size. Available at www.dewalt.com or their service center. I have been using the Lowes brand of synthetic compressor oil. Kobalt oil sells for about $7 and works great. If you do not use your compressor all day like I do, you can use the standard grade of Kobalt compressor oil that sells for around $3. Synthetic oil is for extreme conditions. Good Luck!
