To use the external vga connector of a laptop, you have to activate it. In many notebooks it is Funtion and F7 (Fn-F7). In your notebook it may be F5 or F6, look for a monitor sigh in the F keys. The activation may sometimes rotate in sequence , ie, External + LCD, LCD, External... and so on.

There may wrong setting of refresh rate. Most monitors work at 60 to 70 Hz refresh rate. Above that they tunned blank screen or out 0f range message displayed. Also check the output video signal. Please confirm technical specifications from the documentatation of the monitor.

Was in the middle of working on some research and the monitor went off. It will not power back up. Power cable is not the cause. Help.

talon 6669, Do some reading here>> http://www.lesliewong.us/blog/2005/05/02/hp-pavilion-f1703-flat-panel-display-blackout-solution/ LCD monitor consumers/users have but two options only!! 1. DIY repair (cheapest) contract out the work!! 2. Trade for new wide-screen CCFL lcd display. Do more research in FIXYA profiles of "budmrtn" and "louie12fix" (old) "12fixlouie" !! If unit disassembly, inspection, soldering, parts replacement not your "thing", then option 2 may be best for you. Sounds as if your internal "switch-mode-power-supply/ccfl inverter ccfl lamp supply may have blown a fuse or is in "shutdown mode" !! Watch some video clips of owners/technicians who have had "black-screen-of-death" problems and have effected good repair results when you visit YOUTUBE and search "lcd monitor disassembly" and "lcd monitor repair". After research is done, then remember to return here to fixya and leave a comment on what you are going to do about your unit. Retrevo .com lists unit as "over the hill". Remember this!! Your unit uses same basic electronic technology as all other brands of cold cathode fluorescent lamp back-lit lcd monitors. Once you understand where the "raw white light" comes from, to light-up your lcd panel, then you will say "gee-wiz, those new style, curlie-Q cfl light bulbs must use same technology to make white light!!!" Hope this was informative for you. 12fixlouie

No picture at all. speakers work though.

gstanz52, Oh, Oh, looks like someone needs a new wide screen lcd monitor!!! What is the "date of manufacture" from the rear label???? Maybe the "black screen of death" has finally caught up with your 6 to 8 year old lcd monitor. I would guess that the internal electronic ballast circuit (inverter) has failed and will not supply 500 to 1000 vac to light-up the cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamps" any more!!! Next thing to do is go HERE: http://www.lesliewong.us/blog/2005/05/02/hp-pavilion-f1703-flat-panel-display-blackout-solution/ Do some reading to determine if a possible DIY refurbishment of your unit is in your future. If you want to try refurbishing unit, then do some reading in the fixya profiles of "budmrtn" "buddymc" "12fixlouie" (me) for more information and or do comment to this post. Then you should watch some video clips at YOUTUBE of owners/ technicians disassembling and repairing typical CCFL back-lit lcd monitors.
My advice to you is: Get new higher resolution Wide Screen unit. Then and only then, attempt a refurb job on F50 to keep as a working antique spare monitor. 12fixlouie

How do i get the OSD lock to stop flashing on my screen?

mcadams_alic, Mostlikely a problem inside unit. After visiting this web site: http://www.lesliewong.us/blog/2005/05/02/hp-pavilion-f1703-flat-panel-display-blackout-solution/ you may then understand why your unit is acting "strange"!!! Your lcd monitor isn't any different than any other brand in it's basic design and operation. When very strange stuff starts appearing on the screen of any CCFLback-lit lcd monitor the first place all lcd technicians would look will be the monitor's "switch-mode-power-supply!!!! hope this helps. 12fixlouie

Your screen's ratio is oriented to playing wide screen formatted movies. Set your screen resolution to a ratio that's more or less 2 to 1 and you'll have a more realistic depiction of people on photos.

Try lowering your brightness setting below 55.Its hard to see at just the right angle. The monitor has a failsafe installed for over voltage use of the bulbs for the screen. The lights go out but your screen is still there.

Just check that your monitor is not set to power down(Control Panel> Power Options) and check that the 'Turn Monitor Off' Power Scheme is set to never and turn off any screensaver to see if it still goes off.
