The Nikon has software that allows you to transfer/copy photos to the computer.
There is an alternate method of transferring photos.
Get a USB memory card reader, remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into the USB card reader and then plug it into the computer's USB port. Thes computer will see the memory card as an external memory device, You can then copy the photos to your computer.

I have a Nikon camera too and I can download photos to my computer via the Nikon software but not the other way.

I have downloaded photos from my computer to the memory card using a USB card reader.

I have also downloaded photos from the memory card to other computers (friends) using the USB card reader (no need for the Nikon software).

    I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN.

YOU NEED TO COPY THE PHOTOS ONTO THE MEMORY CARD AND THE INSRT THE MEMORY CARD INTO THE CAMERA.

THE FILES NEED TO BE IN THE SAME FORMAT AS THE NIKON IMAGES SO YOU CAN VIEW THEM IN YOUR CAMERA.

    GO IT NOW, GOOD.

My nikon s51 will not turn on when I plug the transfer cable into the camera

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Nikon Transfer or Picasa.

Is the Nikon S51c the same as the S51? In regards to the post on ability to use SDHC cards up to 32G. Ty.

The S51c adds wifi capabilities to the S51, allowing you to download pictures to a computer via a wifi connection. Otherwise the two models are identical; both models will accept SDHC cards up to 32GB in size.

I have a Nikon Coolpix s51 but my screen is cracked. I am trying to transfer the photos from my memory card and camera to my computer, but i am having trouble figuring out how to do that???

At this point, I would remove the card from the camera. If you don't already have a card reader, invest in one. Connect the card reader to the computer, then plug the card into the reader. You can use Nikon Transfer ( http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/61 ) or the operating system's drag&drop to transfer the pictures to your computer.

If you have pictures stored in the camera's internal memory and the screen is at least partially legible, you can try to select "Copy" from the Setup menu to transfer pictures from the internal memory to the memory card before you follow the suggestions in the first paragraph.

Transfer pictures from my Nikon, Coolpix S51

Hi!

Try to plug into a different USB port. If that does not help then go to Control panel->systems-> hardware tab-> device manager->and now try to see if your Camera appears under the options listed (would be under Scanners and Camera, Click on every + sign to see)

Do rate the solution.
Thanks

Nikon s51 can't transfer video from camera to comptuer

Try removing the memory card and insert it into a USB card reader and connect it to the computer to read/copy the images/video files.
You should format your memory card using the camera functions before you take the next lot of pictures and videos.
