Evidently you downloaded the wrong drivers. Check make and model of your sound card, or check the onboard sound in the "DEVICE MANAGER." (I'm assuming you run Windows XP). Go to the correct manufacturers website and get the right drivers. Or, it could be something as simple as the speakers are muted or disabled. Go to control panel, sounds and audio devices and make sure speakers are enabled and turned up.
first i would recommend unplugging all audio devices, rebooting, then plugging them back in.
If that doesn't work then here is a link to the drivers for it: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=396420&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=385242&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=228#113165
the drivers are for XP but on my compaq presario it still worked on windows 7.
If you re-installed Windows XP and you had Windows XP you did not install an older version - you just need Windows updates and most likely the sound card driver. Windows Update may eventually provide a driver, but I'd check the HP Website (HP owns Compaq) for drivers.
