Does the computer beep when you turn it on? If so, count the beeps and google it. Something like "computer beep 3 times at post" or similar.

If it does not beep, remove all buy one of your memory chips. (mind your static charge, keep in touch with your computer case so you don't fry your mobo or memory) Will the system post with only one chip? If not, try all of your memory chips one at a time. Post now? If so, you can narrow down the issue.

If this doesn't work, remove all of the cards. (video, sound, network, etc) Turn the computer back on. If it still does not beep, it is very likely that the CPU is the culprit, with a slight left field chance of it being the power supply.

I want to run a Dban disk, but nothing I select from the BIOS menu actually boots the computer from the DVD drive containing the disk. I have an ancient Gateway 838GM with Windows xp

Make sure the first option in BIOS boot options is the CD\DVD drive. If it is not you need to move it to the top of the list (usually the +- keys).

If it is already at the top of the list then the problem is that the disk inserted is not formatted correctly to be booted from. If no CD\DVD drive shows up in the BIOS then the drive is not able to be booted from period

I usually leave my PC on unless I will be gone for over a week or so. I turned it off and turned it back on about 10 days later. It would not power up, when I held in the power button I could hear a fan...

It's impossible to be 100% sure, but if you don't even get to POST and have replaced the power supply it's a good bet your motherboard is fried.

Gateway 838GM Video Card?

Hi i'm Rain.
Ok lets put it this way. You get what you pay for. If you want quality video you have to be willing to pay the asking price. Yes you can find it cheaper ,..But look at the word cheaper.
Yes the Express x16 HDCP will work with your system .
If i had to solve the issue i would have said get the PCIE.
All you are looking for is a video card with high speed .
I hope i have been helpful in this problem.

My Gateway 838GM keeps freezing up

When you do get the pc to start do a disk cleanup, by right clicking the c: drive and going into properties in my computer and put a tick next to all of the boxes and hit next to delate them all. Once that has finished defrag the drive, this can be found in the start bar, programs, acessories, system tools. When that is finished go to start bar in the run or search text bar type cmd to open a command prompt window, and type chkdsk c:/f and press enter, it want do anything straight away and will ask you if you would like it to start it the next time the computer boots type "Y" for yes and exit the command prompt. Before restarting the system goto my computer, c: drive , windows , then scroll down until you see a folder named prefetch, open the folder and sellect all, highltight one file by a single left click on it and prees "ctrl"then "A" this highlights everything, hold the shift button down and press delete to delete the entire folders contence, once done reboot the pc. post back if this helps.cheers.

Ethernet controller driver doesnt work

Use the support cd of the motherboard. It contains all the necessary drivers for your ethernet controller and video controller. If you don't have the installer then visit the website of the motherboard brand and there download the right driver of the motherboard model and the operating system that will be used by it.

Gateway 838GM will not turn on even after installing new power supply. It was on and began making a loud noise and just quit.

Did you test the old power supply? If not, noise could have come from CPU fan. In either case, problem is most likely main board and/or CPU. Try removing all plugin components except CPU and heat sink and see if you get any signs of life.

Gateway 838gm no video

Are any fans running? If not take the power supply to a reputable computer repair person. They can test it while you wait. If the power supply is good or the fans are working then I would remove that new RAM. My guess is the power supply is bad.

Good luck
