Question about Sony VAIO VGN-FS640W Notebook

Function Key Problem

Hi, My function key does not appear to be operating properly. When I try to toggle to the VGA out port (Fn + F7) there is no effect. The function key is registering. When I press a function key on its own, it operates as expected. When I press the same function key and the Fn button, there is no effect. For example, in iTunes, F2 alone will rename the track highlighted. Fn+F2 has no effect, however this combination should toggle mute on or off. Any ideas? Thanks Nicko

Following a few questions from friends I'm pretty sure it is a driver issue, but I tried your sugestion to reinstall and it has made no impact.

I tried the upgraded driver on the vaio site but when I try to open the exe file I get a message:

    WBFLASH
    Cannot read the systems information.

So I think we're close, but not quite there. Although the message appears to indicate a different problem.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

Your keyboard driver may be corrupt, go to my computer, right click>properties>hardware tab>device manager and go down list to keyboards, click '+' sign, right click on your keyboard and select uninstal. Restart your notebook and the keyboard and drivers will be reinstalled automatically and should be as normal, but check for any updated drivers at Sony:- http://www.vaio-link.com/downloads/preinstalled/preinstalled.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&m=2303

Acer lap top to Samsung plasma

Depends on what type of ports your HP has and what type of ports your Samsung TV has. The easiest connection is to try to connect using the ports that they both have. Otherwise, if they have different ports then you will need some type of converter that goes between the two of them to make them communicate.

Most computers have a VGA port, does the Samsung TV have a VGA Port? New computers have a HDMI port, does the Samsung TV have a HDMI Port? If so you the connections that are alike or you will need a converter.

Once you have them connected, you just have to select the Input on the TV. Most times if you use VGA then you select PC or Computer as the input. There should be an HDMI input selection if you use HDMI connections.

Reboot the computer and the display might appear on the tv. If not you will have to hit some keystrokes to toggle the display between the computer and the tv. Most times on the computer you will hit the FN function key and one of the F1 thru F12 keys that controls the display on an external. The correct F1 thru F12 key will have LCD/CRT on it or it will have the icon of a display. Press and Hold the FN function key then hit the correct Function key (F1 thru F12) that toggles the display.

I have Dell Inspiron 2650 and AverMedia AverkeyPlus and Philips 100Hz tv, but I cant get the picture on tv.When pc starts well, but after only on compjute.

There is usually a software control for the VGA port. Look for something that looks like a monitor on the function keys at the top of the keyboard. You will have to hold the "Fn" key down while pressing the F7 or which ever function key has the monitor on it. These take a couple seconds to work, so toggle slowly through the modes. There is usually a mode for monitor only (which is what you have now), one for both VGA port and monitor, and one mode for VGA port only.

Enable graphics port for projector image

Once you get the cables attched in the correct order RCB cable from the vga port on the laptop to the projector and the audio cable connected. Use function key combination Fn + F7 to toggle through the video outputs. This toggles the video card to send the signal to the different sources.

If you need to zoom or magnify the image, the combination for that is Fn + F10. This actually changes the screens resolution, it will toggle through all the settings.

The easiest is to connect a standard CRT monitor to the external video port. Enable this from the laptop using the function key. One of the functions keys should have what looks like the outline of a standard monitor on it. Using the CTRL key and that function key will turn on that video port.
