IBM Correcting Selectric III backspace not working.

Is there something I could check myself to see why the above is not working? The liftoff tape is working fine (once I position it correctly), and the express key works fine, but the correction key and the backspace key will not work and just make a noise when pressed. I bought this typewriter new years ago and rarely used it. Just pulled it out of the cupboard as I am thinking of selling it and was dismayed to find the above problem. Thanks in advance.

Wow, that would be cool if it is a 10-second fix. How do I email you?

It's a 10 second fix with a can of non-drying lubricant (I had the same problem). email me/repost if you still have this problem and I'll tell you exactly where to spray.

Since it hasn't been used in quite a while the lubrication in the machine has become gummy & sticky. The cam that operates the backspace is being activated, but the arm that drives the backspace mechanism isn't being pulled on.

Machine needs a deep cleaning and oiling and then readjusting to correct this problem. (Don't spray WD-40 in it...makes it worse !)

(This repair is usually beyond what a non-technician can do.)

do not use WD40 an any typewriter. Are you pressing the letter you want lifted of after the correction key> Is the dull side of the lift off tape facing away from you?

IBM Selectric II typewriter stuck in correcting position

If you know how to remove the right dust cover (black inside the T/W below the carrier) next to the R. side frame is the correction set up mech. spray some WD40 on the arms especially where they pivot, they should free up.

Correcting IBM Selectric II Typewritter correcton ribbon won't engage

Selectric I and II type elements are identical (88 char) where Selectric III uses a different element (96 char). The 88 character element will have white lettering and the 96 character element will have yellow. Directly underneath the lift-up tab to remove the element will be a 3-digit number. That's the last 3 digits of the element's part number, which will be preceeded by 1167 for 88 character, or 1352 or 96 character. For example, if you have a '052" stamped on the element, and it's an 88 character style, the P/N will be 1167052.

The correcting mechanism is an intricate additional function of the backspace function. To test it/adjust it/or repair it requires the machine be hand-cycled using a hand cycle wheel which is screwed into the right hand side operational shaft. It's unlikely that an un-trained party would be successful repairing this..
