It has a AMD Sempron Processor and 384 MB Ram expandable to 2G with 30GB Hardrive. It is so slow so thought I would add more memory to try and quicken it up. I bought 516mb Ram but it doesn't look the same as the other ram. I removed the new one and replaced the old one and it started OK so maybe they were uncompatible. I think it is time for a new faster laptop.

    Thanks for the help.

256-MB DDR synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) at 266 MHz,
expandable to 2.0 GB on models with Intel Pentium M
processors and 1.0 GB on models with Intel Celeron M
    processors

Did you install DDR or DDR2 memory. It makes a difference. The 4 beeps are an memory error code.

Let me know what has been done so I can help you further.

What was the original RAM size and what did you increase it to?

Are the RAM modules fron the same manufacturer and the same type?

The new ram you have installed, is it the same speed/type as what is already in the system?
Take out the new ram and leave the old in. Try and boot. If all ok, swap out the old ram for the new and see if you can boot. If the system does not boot when trying one of the above, you know it's bad ram. If the system boots with the old ram and the new ram installed seperately, i'ts likely that you have two different types of ram. Check your old ram and see what spec it is. Your new ram should be the same. Compaq do not list a four beep error on boot, but my guess is conflicting ram.

What is wrong when my compaq v2000 beeps 2 times loud when I turn it on but no boot

Beep codes are unique to each brand of computer:
Compaq v2000
1 short with 1 long beep = bad bios. Must reload bios from disc.
2 short beeps = general bios failure
for more - do a google search for "v2000 Beep Codes" and go to the link for "bioscentral" - all are listed.

Computer will not start

It all depends how many beeps there were.
From http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12253_div/12253_div.HTML
Diagnostic LED Explanation Table Number of 1-second red LED blinks followed by 2-second pause, then repeats:
2-processor thermal protection activated
3-processor not installed
4-power supply failure
5-memory error
6-video error
7-PCA failure (ROM detected failure prior to video)
8-invalid ROM, bootblock recover mode

I have only really come across 4 beeps = order new Power Supply or 5 Beeps = reseat the memory and hope it works

Oli

Tha laptop just beeps when switched on. power ok, nothing on monitor - beeps 4 times then that is it!!!

4 short beeps might mean you have a bad memory module (beeps are coded) .. if you have two memories installed you can try takeing one out at a time .. it will start working when the good module is the only one plugged in .. just removing and replacing the memory sometimes cleans the pins so that it works again .. ... there are other possibilities that are more expensive usually ... so you hope its just the memory .. here is a site that gives beep codes for many machines ..

4 beeps and blank screen

It's either going to be a video memory error or base memory error. Either one requires replacing the motherboard, which more than likely wouldn't be worth the money. You should probably get your data backed up and buy a new computer.
