The mysterious red lights

what is the deal with the red lights dang! I got a 360 from my friend for free with no wires and no nothing. he had just got it that way to like the day before. he said it might not work. but my other friend brought his cords and harddrive over and we got it to work like once or twice. but he left and took the wires so i gotta find the wires and a controller online or somtin. but it just has the the same dang red lights!!
