I am poting this here hopefully it will help someone else. I have a richmond 40 gallon power vent water heater and it was not working. It was flashing 2-3 on the LED. I used this procedure and it started up..

you can reset the control by unplugging the blower during start up, leave unplugged for at least 5 seconds, plug back in and within 30 seconds cycle temp control from hot to low 6 times.

I first had to hold both Hot and Cold buttons until the left light starting blinking; then let go ahead and enter the code LRLLRLRR like above. Make sure you shut off the blower for at least one minute. Then you have 10 seconds for each step. If that doesn't work take the sensor outdoors for half hour for "fresh air" then try again. IF that doesnt work replace the sensor and try the code again.

Richman power vent light blinking 7 times. You must turn it off and wait 5 minutes also put dial to the lowest temp. once the 5 minutes is up, turn it back on and dial the knob from lowest to high 3 times then set your temperature

Flammable vapor sensor lockout reset 7 blinking lights with a three second delay between each set,for Richmond 40 gallon propane power vent water heater. Unplug water heater wait 1 minute, set manual thermostat to low, plug in heater cycle from low to high heat and back to low seven times this will reset sensor error and unit should start up after this. If the condition continues to come back you will need to replace the sensor which you can get from Richmond. 800-621-5622 parts center. This reset worked for me. Hope this helps someone else out.

Richmond gas water heater need reset code

Intellivent gas control can be reset on some units.
Honeywell does not make Intellivent.

1) Copy following links:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-repair-Rheem-FVIR.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermocouple.html

2) For Rheem, there is a glass vial that is broken if FV system tripped.
This requires new glass vial, which Rheem may send depending on model.
It might also require new parts such as gas control valve, and/or replacement FV sensor depending on model.
Some models require full replacement of water heater.
Each model can be different.

3) Rheem does not post service manuals, and says customers should call service technician.
Combustion parts are held in place with tamper-proof screws and combustion door gasket might need to be replaced when removed from front of unit.

Put in gas valve, a few days later sensor set lock out due to flamible sensor setting off. what are the codes to unlock system?

Air intake is probably clogged, so combustion air flow slowed and caused overheating inside combustion chamber.
This tripped FV system and broke TRD, which is a small glass vial located under burner. The spring-activated air baffle snapped closed and shut off air supply, and also tripped FV lockout of gas control.
Remove burner, replace glass vial ordered from Richmond, and clean air intake.

If you have Intellivent gas control, then it can be reset.
Copy following link to identify gas control valve, and download possible service manual:

Hot water heater womt light, flammable vapor sensor code

Most likely: Combustion chamber got too hot because air intake is clogged with dust, causing less air to flow upward through vent pipe ... the slowed flow of air caused combustion chamber to overheat.

What brand and model water heater?
Look at label on side of unit and add comment.
Otherwise call service tech to repair/ replace water heater and clean arrestor screen (air intake) and replace or reset parts as needed, depending on model number and brand water heater.

AO Smith, Bradford white, and Rheem are main manufacturers.
Each has slightly different repair protocol, and each gas control valve can also be different. So more information is needed.

Identify gas control valve:

Rheem TRD/ FVIR glass vial

Detecting gas and won't light

Open following link for troubleshoot error codes showing 7 flashes on Honeywell gas control valve is system lockout due to flammable vapor:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Honeywell-gas-control_error-Damper-series.pdf
The FV system in Rheem can be tripped by presence of flammable vapors such as gasoline or paint fumes etc, or it can be tripped if water heater was dropped, or mis-manufactured, or if gas control valve is defective, or if water heater is not getting adequate fresh air, or there is inadequate venting of combustion by-product.
When combustion chamber overheats, then glass vial breaks and damper shuts off air supply to water heater and it will not light.

No hot water, unit will not fire,

It sounds like the Flame vapour sensor has tripped. Have you been painting in the basement recently or have and pait thiner, bleach or any other flamable material in the same room?

You will have to air out the room for at leaset 24hrs to get the fumes out and then try reseting the tank. If this doesn't work you need to call in a service technition to reset the FVIR sensor

yep, for certain it is the vapour sensor tripped by the paint fumes. I work in the hvac field, on service and at least half a dozen times a year, i go to no hot water calls, due to the sensor being tripped off by kitty litter. the sensor is designed to be as failsafe as possible. Any slight detection of vapor, that could potentially be combustible and the ignition sequence is locked.
