GE washer agitation starts normal the progressively slows and then stops agitation. All other modes work fine. Model # unknown. Motor or transmission? Thanx people!!!

Model # located on the back of the control box of top load, just inside of door on front load. Other Op modes ok, problem points to agitator support shaft or the belt drive of the agitator.

Slow agitator

Sometimes it is a very simple fix.
Agitator dogs.
4 little plastic thingies that wear out so the agitator has nothing to grip.
I'm not sure if they are specific to each model washer but it's about a $5.00 try.
You have to take the agitator out.
I watched YouTube.
Pretty easy and far less expensive than a pro!!
It took 10 mins. The hardest part was getting the agitator apart, which takes elbow grease!!
Good luck!

The agitator tries to rotate, but instead jerks, but doesn't rotate in normal motion. It also makes a ratcheting snapping sound.

Does the lower half of the agitator still operate normally? (Back and forth) Can you spin the top half (spiraled part) of the agitator in both directions with out the lower half moving? If so then you have a worn set of agitator "dogs" they are little plastic ears located in the upper half of the agitator and catch the notched inner section of the agitator to make the top action work like a corkscrew, slipping one way and driving the other as the lower half goes back and forth.
To get at these parts you will need to remove the agitator, Remove fabric softener dispenser or cap on top, and look down inside tho opening.
You will need to remove the plastic cover inside that has two ears sticking up, pull on one side or the other and it should pop out, there will be a rubber seal around it so it will be a little difficult to remove.
Now you will have access to the bolt that holds the entire agitator in the machine. The agitator dogs are located right on the outer edge of the center cup that the bolt goes through. To access them you will want to seperate the two halves of the agitator and flip the top half upside down while holding your hand inside it to catch the cup with the dogs in it. Part number 80040, for the dogs.
Good luck to You!!

Agitator will not make contact on every turn/hit and miss

Hi, The dog kit is bad inside the agitator. Here is how to change them.
To replace the dog kit in the agitator, remove the top cap/rinse dispenser and the inner bolt cover. Remove the 7/16” bolt and lift the agitator out of the washer. Separate the 2 halfs of the agitator and replace the dog kit inside the upper part of the agitator.
Please let me know if this helps you or if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

Kenmore Washing Machine Agitator

The following advice is for replacing the "Agitator Dogs" on Kenmore and Whirlpool TOP LOADER style washing machines. This simple repair can save you a fortune in repair costs as the replacement parts are very inexpensive at a cost of less than $10. The replacement kit part number is 80040. You can order on line at various appliance parts websites, or use this part number and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer.

What are "Agitator Dogs"? These are small plastic pieces (usually 4) that are located under the agitator center cap that grip the agitator and turn it during the wash cycle. They can (and do) wear out dependent upon the use of the washer. If you are in the habit of doing large load sizes frequently, or wash large items such blankets or afghans, this can wear the teeth off and reduce the life of the agitator dogs.

SYMPTOMS REQURING REPLACEMENT: The agitator fails to turn during the wash cycle, or will not turn with a heavy load. The timer will run normally through all cycles, and you will be able to hear the gearcase (transmission) engage and run. The washer will also drain normally. The only indication that something is wrong will be the agitator slipping or not turning at all. The result will be clothes that do not wash properly and will sit on the bottom of the wash tub.

To replace the Agitator Dogs, follow these steps:

1.Remove the agitator center cap by either pulling straight up or gently placing a flat blade screwdriver into a slot located in the cap.
2.If the agitator is equipped with an inner cap with a handle, remove this as well by pulling straight up.
3.Remove the center bolt of the agitator. You will have either a 7/16" hex bolt or a recessed square plastic nut. If you have the square recessed type, use a 3/8" to ½" ratchet adapter to remove.
4.Remove the agitator by grasping the bottom flange and carefully pulling straight up. Try to keep all the parts assembled while doing this, so do not pull too hard. This will make this repair much easier.
5.Place your hand over the top of the agitator and separate the upper portion of the agitator from the lower portion and turn the top half over in your hand. The agitator dog assembly will come out in your hand.
6.With the agitator dog assembly in your hand, lay the rest of the agitator aside. Pay careful attention to how the dogs are installed. Remove the worn dogs and reinstall new ones. It's that simple.
7.With all the dogs replaced and the assembly still in your hand, place the upper part of the agitator over the top of it, upside down, ensuring the inner assembly tabs align correctly.
8.Now keep your hand over the agitator top to hold all the pieces together and turn the entire assembly over (upright position).
9.Carefully align and reinsert the upper portion of the agitator to the lower portion. Again, making sure the two pieces align correctly.
10.Place the entire agitator assembly back on the gearcase shaft and reinstall center nut. NOTE: DO NOT over tighten the nut, or the agitator will not spin correctly. Just make the nut snug. Reinstall center cap and inner cap (if equipped).

These instructions should give you the basics on how to perform this repair. Since there are various agitator types in use by Whirlpool and Kenmore, assembly can vary.

Kenmore washer aggiates slower than when new. is

Usually, there are two agitator modes. A Normal ("Fast") mode, and a delicates ("Slow") mode. Put washer in 'delicates' cycle and see if the agitator slows down even further. If it stays at same speed as in perma press or 'normal' mode, then there is an open in the circuit betwixt the controller dial and the agitator control.

The slow weak function of the augar

the reason for the "weak agitation " is a bad set of agitator dogs. by removing the center fabric softener cup, you can get to and unscrew the center shaft bolt7/16. after removing the bolt, the agitaor will remove and the agitator dogs canbe replaced. part number 80040.youll need to split the agitator top and bottom to insall them . they simply slide into place.

Agitator not rotating

I have had to replace the agitator gear just inside the agitator, mine did the same thing, I took the agitator apart, removed the plastic gear, the gear has a number on it, you can call sears service dept with the number, also a good idea is to have the model and serial number of the washer, the part was really inexpensive as well, my washer has been working great now for over a year since I replaced mine, if you don't want to get into it like I did, sears also offers service, but I would try to call and get the price on the part first before calling in a service tech, thanks again for your Question, hope that provided you the solution, please rate this for us,

Agitator problems

sounds as if the transmission agitator pawl is slipping. inside the transmission is a gear connected to the agitator. there is a spring loaded pawl that rotates around the center and engages its pawl or hook into the agitator gear for each rotation. either the pawl hook is worn or the agitator gear is rounded off. the transmission must be opened up to see what is a miss
