Same problem after I recalibrate buttons.
By the way it is the Canon scanner 8400F and not 8600F - sorry.
    Please help.

8400F. Taran, I get into Scangear from having clicked on "copy", becase I checked the scanner driver. When in Scangear-advanced mode-image settings-calibration settings-execute at every scan: ON. Is it supposed to be ON or OFF ?
This is what I did to calibrate but still 2178.0. My lamp is on but no sound comes from it.
    Pls help. Alex

I am Assuming you have tried what others have suggested ..Canon has a diagnostic tool embedded into the scansoft omnipage. I would suggest that you run it. It runs a series of tests and automatically fixes any glitches. Just run every test and don't skip anything. I own a canon scanner myself and this worked for me more often than not. Try it and let me know if it worked.

Hi there
Uninstall the scanners drivers and software, restart the PC and reinstall the scanner again. If there is a problem with the scanner itself this way of troubleshooting will verify it, lets hope its just a communication problem between the computer and the scanner.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya

Release the lock switch, detach the USB cable, and re-install drivers, starting driver installation with USB unplugged.

If standard drivers on Scanner CD do not work, install drivers from here:

Official Canon Drivers and Software

Canon USA:DRIVER & DOWNLOADS

Driver Downloads

If still no luck, and you already checked lock switch and calibration, then this is an hardware fault, in that case you need to have it repaired or replaced.

Regards.

Sir,

I think the problem is related to main board. This can't fix by yourself so, better contact the canon for replacement.

Also check the software it is updated one. Try to reinstall the software and system motherboard driver. Better reinstall the OS. Update the OS also helps....

Tips:
Scanning is only performed through a computer and not with the printer alone.

Thanks
good luck

After much tinkering today trying to reinstall drivers about 100 times I think I found the answer:
I hadn't used my Canon 8000F for scanning slides/film for quite a few months, but had been using it for regular platen use. I got the 2,178,0 error. I found to get past it was to go to the "settings" section in Scangear (advanced version) and to click on the calibration. The top bulb in my scanner burst into light again and the scanner calibrated itself. After this I could scan slide/film!

Its a problem with the scanner assembly .may be because it is bit misaligned or the moving belt is faulty.

On the top of the slide holder is an empty space seperate from the 2x2 spaces. make sure that space is clear of anything. this is how the scanner figures out what its doing.
other than that I have no idea., had mine 2 months and haven't had a problem.
try a simple level scan in the toolbox and see if it works

Scan from in to Microsoft Word

To be able to do that without problems you have to have installed the whole program for the scanner..I mean the driver and the software to manage it ..This can be downloaded from canon support site in case you do not have it on a disk ...or in the computer ..
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_8600f#DriversAndSoftware
here is the link where you can download the canoscan toolbox..which is teh software I was talking about ..
So , the procedure is to initiate the scanning from the toolbox in the computer ..and during the wizard ..select the preferences to scan document ..and not photo ..This will probably give you the possibility to select the program to be scanned into ..or will scan in word by default..remember to select the option to scan document ..and not picture..otherwise will scan as a photo and will end up with a jpeg of gif file ..
Please do not hesitate to ask more questions in a comment if you have something you did not understood..and please rate my answer cause it affects my work here ..

I have a CanoScan 8600F. When I want to scan I get the not enough space on the target disk

This seems to happen quite often with the Canon scanners. If you know you have enough space on your hard drive, open the CanoScan Toolbox, then click on Settings and change the folder where the temporary files are stored to another folder of your choice, or create a new one in your documents.

Receive "cannot scan because the original may not be set correct.

Is your Scanner locked ? If yes then you will see there's a solid plastic backing on the inside of the lid that needed to be removed. Also remove all protective plastic too.

Won't scan - says not enough disk space.

I had the same problem. Solved it by going into the "CanoScan Toolbox" - "Settings" - and pressing the "Defaults" button in that panel - and then "OK" button. Afterwards everything worked fine. Hope this helps you.

CanoScan LiDE 50, error code:2,7,0

When you say the error occurs as soon as you press "Scan", is that the button on the scanner, or is it the Scan button inside of Toolbox or ScanGear?
If it is the one on the scanner, try accessing the driver through an application such as Toolbox. If you didn't download that when you got the driver, then go back to the Canon download page and download & install the CanoScan Toolbox. Once that's installed, lauch Toolbox from Start|All Programs|Canon|....look for Toolbox from here. Once you have Toolbox open, click the 'Save' option. Next, check the box that indicates to Use the scanner driver. Click the Scan button at the bottom. This should open ScanGear. Attempt to Preview scan.

Will not scan photos, only slides

Where are you scanning from? Do you get an error? If scanning from Toolbox, check the box that says to use ScanGear or use the Scanner driver. Then make sure it is not set for Film as the select source.

Cannot scan film and slides

Check the cable that connects to the lid of the scanner. If it is disconnected, you won't get the Film options.
