Question about Dell Inspiron 1420 Laptop

Laptop audio issues

My Dell Inspiron 1420 (runs on Vistas Home Premium) has just recently done something odd. Any audio I play has an odd muffling sound, like the source was stuffed inside a plastic bowl. This is most noticeable when I have my headphones in. I've already confirmed that the headphones are not the source, because I have two pairs that have the same result when plugged into my laptop, but sound perfectly fine when plugged into my iPod. I don't remember changing my sound settings at all, so I don't know what's up.

I'm not sure... how to do that.
Forgive me, I'm not a genius with computers.

I've searched all through my sound settings, and didn't find a substantial amount of EQ settings. Plus, I haven't touched those in a while, so I'm not so sure that's the cause.

The type is Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC.

It most likely be in the Control Panel. Usually having a name to do with the sound chip manufacture. The one called Sounds and Audio Devices might tell you the manufacture's name. Plus it might have the EQ settings there too.

Can you adjust the EQ settings to normal?

Right click on the white speaker icon,by the clock ,Select Playback devices, when the sound box opens, select the play back tab, double click on speakers, click the enhancements tab, select disable all sound effects, click on the advance tab, select 24 bit 48000 Hz (studio quality) click test,if you hear sound, click apply and close the open boxes. Now double click on the red speaker by the clock, plug in the headphones, check the box at the bottom that says headphone virtualization, click ok.that should do it.

Hi, you have to install the updated audio codec for your system. Here's the link. Copy and paste this link to your address bar:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/Advanced-Vista-Codec-Package.shtml

When the webpage opens, click the Download button. Click and choose external mirror to download. A box will appear, if there's an option to Run or Save the File, click Run but it there's no Run button, then click the Save File button. When done downloading, Run the installer.

Anonymous,
First open up the sound properties icon on the taskbar and verify that nothing is muted. You can download and install the Audio Drivers for the Inspiron 1420 at the link below.

I have an inperion 1525 and after i reinstalled windows vista home premium, the internal speakers stopped working

It sounds like a driver issue. Go to http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs and enter your service tag. It should give you a list of available drivers for your system. Make sure that it specifies Windows Vista in the drop down menu. Check for audio drivers and install the most recent one.

boot in the safe mode, see if issue still occurs (F8 at boot) if it does, then likely there is a problem with the Video Card or the LCD itself, I'm leaning toward the video card.
Try flashing the bios to current and installing the most current video driver, see if anything changes.

Try to change the resolution of your computer to lower, restart the computer and see if the problem still exist. if the problem still exist try to reinstall the video driver of your computer. don't rewrite the driver of the video device, uninstall the driver then install again. if any thing happens feel to reply.
