Pavilion is a laptop, it had to work at some point. If the computer can't see it, it is not connected, probably dead...you'll have to remove it to check the connections, and most likely replace it if you can't light it up with external 5V...
I called a tech friend of mine at HP and he said he didn't know of any combination of keys that could turn off the keypad. I would check Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Keyboard.
