If this is not a setting problem, then the flash unit may be defective, the part is not expensive, but the job must be done at a repair shop.

Unfortunately, after all these years, the rechargeable NiCad batteries in these flashes are usually 'dead' and unable to hold a sufficient charge to operate the flash.
Also, unfortunately, Polaroid corp didn't exactly make it easy for the owner to replace this built-in battery pack themselves. So, herewith are some tips for the hobbyist who would like to try such a replacement themselves.
One other thing: keep in mind that there is a possibility that dead NiCad cells aren't the only problem with your flash, so you may still end up with a dead flash after all of this work.
----------
Sounds like your flash batteries may have died. See this site and follow the instructions properly to resolve this issue completely.:

try if the flash is working..

*Turn off the camera.
*Install a set of new or fully charged batteries into the camera.
*Turn on the camera.
*Press the Flash Status button to scroll through the flash options until Full Flash (the lightning bolt icon alone, with no other letter or symbol) is displayed. This forces the camera to use the flash.

Polaroid camera will not turn on

If it is a new camera, it is strange it switches off so quick. On the other hand, alkaline batteries are not the best choice.
You better use NiMH rechargeable, because they can keep up a high voltage longer. Always us batteries from the same batch. Never mix batteries from different sort, like NiMH and alkaline.
NEVER Never use manganese (Zinc-Carbon) batteries in your camera. They should be in a flash light. They don't have enough capacity and can leak easy.
Always check the contacts on the batteries are clean and shiny. (Also the contacts in the camera. You can clean contacts with a dry cloth or cotton swabs.

If it is a brand new camera, and it won't work as expected, bring it back to the shop.

Flash is not working

I'm sorry that the flash on the Camera is not working. If the Forced flash setting is already enabled and the flash is still not working, then the issue may be due to another camera setting. Even if the Forced flash setting is enabled, the flash will still not work in the following circumstances:
- When shooting MPEG movies - When shooting in the Twilight or Handheld Twilight mode - If shooting with the Burst or Multi Burst mode - Shooting with Sweep Panorama - Shooting with the Fireworks or High Sensitivity mode. - If an external flash is connected
Please make sure that the Camera is not in any of the above modes.

On my Kodak EasyShare Z710 camera is not flashing, what am I doing wrong?

Make sure the flash door is popping open all the way. If it has recently received a hard shock or bump, it might have blown the flash. If it is still under warranty, might try taking it back. Also check the battery power.
