Solution #1 to reset printer settings to default settings did not solve the problem.

  • imchet Jan 19, 2009

I appreciate the last input but it did not solve the problem. The printer is set to default printer status from the installation disc. Only recently has it failed to print from word processor documents. I am able to print from email and web sites. The printer ejects two blank pages when attempting to print from any word processor.

  • imchet Jan 24, 2009

Thank you Ginko, but setting default and reinstalling printer did not solve problem. Manufactures website, HP said no updated driver availible for 720C printer. They stated XP had driver compatible with installed printer. I am using XP home ed. Ver 2002

  • imchet Jan 27, 2009

None of the advice so far has solved the problem. Still printer refuses to print from any word processor. Could the HP Deskjet 720C software be at fault? The disc lists Win. 3.1x, Win.95 and Win. NT 4.0 but does not include Win. XP ver.2002

  • imchet Jan 27, 2009

    drumbanger,
Thank you for the suggestion but reinstalling MS Word did not fix it.

  • imchet Jan 27, 2009

leecom72 I followed your instructions and on the reinstall got an error message 11 stating: driver installation error when installing printer software, not compatible with Win, XP.The error message said to contact manufacturer for an updated ver. HP website does not list an updated driver for this printer. Where do I go from here?

  • imchet Feb 11, 2009

last fix did not work either. Reset printer settings to default, no change. Printer will still not print from word procesor. Print window shows Status as Idle rather than ready.

If it is printing in the web or e-mail etc, means the printer is working.
check in the control panel if the printer you are using is online and you must assure if the printing you've selected in the MS word is the model of the printer that youv've using to print the document.
in the word document, you can see the file-print-printer name-in this area, you must select the model of the printer...and you can print...

I noticed that you said the install cd only lists that it's for the older M$ OS's. and NOT xp.

  • I would suggest you go HERE, and follow those steps but FIRST read next line (below)..
  • When you're at the end of step #1, (when you see that your printer is installed in Device Manager) Instead, Right-Click on the Printer, and Uninstall it. Then disconnect the USB cable.
  • If the printer is not there, just ignore the last process and continue below.
  • Go to Control Panel>Add Remove Programs, and search in that list for any software that relates to that printer specifically. Find (if any), and pick Uninstall.
  • Then, Restart your computer. when it boots up, Plugin your USB cable and watch in the lower right hand corner on the taskbar, when you see a dialogue bubble pop up telling you it has found new hardware, click on it right away, and when it brings you to the add hardware window, press cancel. Repeat this process if another dialogue box appears down there. Once it is all done popping up, it should state that your hardware may not have been installed properly.
Then you can skip to Step#3 on hp's website in the link I gave you in the link above.

Once you're done with that Step#3 and #4. Restart your computer. and try printing from Notepad.

I Hope this Helps, and
I Wish you Good Luck.

I actually have this same problem at work some of the time. What i do to fix it is I turn off the printer and disconnect it from the PC then I reboot the PC and reconnect the printer to a different USB port and turn the printer back on. After that it prints correctly.

Did you try disconnecting the printer from the PC, rebooting the PC then reconnecting it to a different USB slot? That is what I have to do when the printers stop working at my job.

Chances are when you cut and paste to a Word document, there are leading or trailing blank pages.

Put you cursor at the end of the document text and press delete until you the last page has printing on it.

If there are leading blank pages, put the cursor at the beginning of the document, and press delete until the the contents of the document are at the cursor.

I will state again, MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO BLANK PAGES IN THE DOCUMENT, either leading the printed material, or more likely, trailing the printed material.

Also check the Properties setup for the printer.

Have you checked if any unprinted formatting occurs in the document. Check by going to (MSWord) Tools|Options| and under Formatting Marks, select All. Note all the section and page breaks in the document.

Please confirm, does the printer print any of the printed material from the document before or after ejecting the pages? Or is it's only function is that it ejects two pages?

Please reply because I have further questions that depend on the answers you give.

Hi there
Just reinstall the printers software and print a test page, this usually irons out any problems with the binary instructions sent to the printer by the computer.

Good luck and don't forget to restart the computer after you have uninstalled the original software so changes are made in the registry.

Go to Control Panel>>Printers, and ensure the printer is set by default printer. If not , then click the right button of mouse, and chose 'set as default'.

If that does not fix the problem, then reinstall the printer software, using the printer disk, or downloading the drivers from factory website.

I was wondering if you had installed any recent updates? That can cause problems sometimes. Have you done a system restore on your computer? If you know of any recent updates, especially from microsoft or zonelab, restore your computer to when before the updates were installed.

Do you have the latest drivers downloaded?
Did you update an older program while having the newer program installed?

Try the following: start word using the /a switch (Start, Run and type in
winword /a and press Enter) and try printing the document.

Seems the document is corrupt. Try copy and paste into a

You probably have a pending documents to print. Cancel all documents to
print How to do this: Start>Settings>Printer and Faxes> locate
your computer brand/model and right click on it and choose cancel all
documents. If all of the documents was not can-celled, remove your
printer cable attached on your computer and keep of refreshing your
windows. In some case if the document will not cancelled, restart your
computer and see if the document was all cancelled.

If you don't have pending documents to print and when you try to print
something and it came out blank, try to reinstall your printer driver.

When printing from Word - File > Print - is the printer shown in the dropdown list of available printers and have you then selected it?

Printing from your computer is primarily controlled by settings in
Microsoft Windows. Determine whether your printer setup in Windows is
correct by using the Windows Printing Troubleshooter.

In Windows, click Start, and then click Help and Support.

In the Search box, type Windows Print Troubleshooter, and click the arrow to start searching.

In the Suggested Topics box, click List of troubleshooters, and then select Printing from the list.

Follow the instructions in the Printing Troubleshooter.

If the Microsoft Windows printer setup looks correct, check the
Microsoft Word printer settings to make sure that the selected printer
matches the printer you are using. On the File menu, click Print, and
then click the name of the printer you want to use in the Name box.

Make sure that the page range you've selected in the Print dialog box corresponds to the pages you want to print

ALSO make sure your computer and printer drivers are updated, as well as your office program

Also make sure your firewall or anitviurs programs aren't blocking anything.

A LITTLE EXTRA INFO ABOUT PRINTING

The key to setting up printers in the RDP-DOS system is to
test the printer from the "command prompt" (DOS Prompt), independent
of the RDP-DOS system. If the printer works with the steps below, then it
can be added to the RDP-DOS system with option 096 on menu 98.

A local printer is defined as connected
directly to an LPT port, using a
a parallel printer cable, on a Windows based workstation. It must be
connected to LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, or LPT4. Printers connected to infrared
ports, COM ports, or USB ports will not work as "local" printers.
    However

a USB printer may work if it configured as a shared printers. See "USB Printers"
at the end of this document for details. To test a local printer, go to a command prompt and type the
    following:

    DIR >LPT1: (or
LPT2 if connected to LPT2, etc)

This command may have to be repeated several times to send
enough lines to a laser printer to eject a page.

If the printer successfully prints from the command Prompt
with the command above, then use 096, option "P" to add the
printer. Enter the data requested as below:

    Parallel Port:

    For LPT1, enter "1", for LPT2,
    enter "2".

    Output Type:

    Enter "Local".
    "NONE" turns of this printer.

    RDP Printer Name:

Any name will work, such as "My Laser
    Printer"

    Lines per page

    Enter 66 (the default)

    Laser/Sheet Feed:

Enter "Y" if a laser or sheet
    feed printer

    Esc Codes:

Leave the Esc Codes blank, which uses RDP
    defaults.

It is possible to print to a printer that is not connected to
your workstation, provided the printer is set up to use the "NET"
command from Microsoft. It is critical to test the printer with the steps
below from a command prompt before attempting to define the printer in the RDP
system with 096 on menu 98.

    1. The printer must first be shared using either Microsoft
Printer Sharing, or Novell Netware Print Queues. The printer can be
physically connected to a workstation or using "JET Direct"
technology to connect to the network directly. The process for setting
up a shared printer is well documented by both Microsoft and Novell and is
beyond the scope of this document. The key is to test the printer with
the steps below from a command prompt.

    2. Shared printing with Novell networks is much better and
faster when using Novell Print Queues, using the Novell Client for Netware,
not the Microsoft Client for Novell Networks. Please read the section
at the end in troubleshooting: "Novell Networks Work Best with Novell
      Print Queues"

    3. After setting up the Windows Shared Printer or the Novell
Print Queue, to test the printer, go to a workstation other than the one
where the printer is connected and open a command prompt and type:

    NET VIEW

This Microsoft command should display all servers in your
default workgroup or Domain. Microsoft uses the term "Server
Name", but the names listed may be the name of a Novell Server, a Windows
2000 Server, a Windows NT 4.0 server or a Win95/98/ME/XP workstation that has
one or more shared printers or folders.

The options available with the Microsoft "Net"
command are different for Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, XP, and 2000. For a list of
valid options for your operating system, type

    NET VIEW /?.

After using "Net View" to display all servers, use
the following command to view the shared printers on one computer:

    Net View \\Servername

Reading no paper paper tray is full

Instructions
  1. Check the display for an error message. If the display reads "Clearing paper from printer," the engine has detected a jam and is attempting to eject the jammed pages automatically. These pages will often be blank.
  2. Check the display for "Performing PRINT/STOP TEST" or "Performing SERVICE TEST." Either of these messages indicates that the printer is going through a test procedure that may eject blank pages.
  3. Reduce the amount of paper in the input tray if the printer is feeding multiple blank sheets at a time. The printer will pull extra pages through if the input tray is overfilled.
  4. Replace the paper in the input tray with the correct size if needed. If the 4600 printer detects the paper as an incorrect size for the print job, it may eject the paper without printing anything on it.
  5. Replace the ink cartridges if certain colors are blank on the page. Replace the black cartridge if printing a black text document that is coming out blank. The printer may attempt to print even if the ink level is low or empty, but will unable to print anything on the page, causing it to come out blank.
  6. Remove the sealing tape from newly installed cartridges. The tape covers the print heads and should be removed before installing the cartridges. If the tape is left on, it will prevent ink from getting on the pages as they print.
  7. Press the "Check mark" button on the control panel to enter the printer menu. Run a diagnostic so the printer can attempt to determine the cause of the blank pages printing. Press the up or down arrow to select "Diagnostics." Press the "Check mark" button. Press the "Down" arrow to highlight "PQ Troubleshooting." Press the "Check mark" button. The printer runs a diagnostic and returns to a ready state when done.

Printer prints blank pages from notepad, word, and excel.

Hi tim8094

Obviously there is nothing wrong with the printer, because you are able to print from the Internet.

Before attempting to print from word, excel etc, make sure you have the correct printer selected (check it through FILE MENU -> PRINT ->PROPERTIES)
Do a print test by typing just couple of words -may be in different color-
Best of luck

Blank pages

You might want to start by doing some general print quality troubleshooting, including printing a test page. The test page should give you an indication if you have issues with print cartridges. Also, some printers may not print at all if even one of their cartridges is empty:

Correcting Print Quality Problems

The other thing that occurred to me is that your document feeder could be pulling in more than one sheet of paper at a time, this means it would output blank sheets as well. Here's a web page that describes the problem and what to do about it:

Automatic Document Feeder Error

Hopefully the answer to your problem is available in those web pages. Good luck.
