Ati radeon 256mb pci video causes windows xp to crash,

Then restarts automatically. Computer tech installed this earlier today as a fix for a partially failing motherboard.

Check your driver
my computer properties hardware device scroll to your video make sure the old one ais disabled if not click it and disable
make sure your new one shows if there is any marks like ? or ! you need to update the driver
if your new one is'nt showing then add it through add new hardware in control panel

the drivers might not be installed correctly you might have to uninstall the graphics card restart your computer then reinstall the graphics card and its drivers

If your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it

Hello gran_capricc, you must remove Ati old video driver from your computer, before installing latest driver, go to Start> Control Panel > Uninstall a program > ATI Video Driver Remove, Restart Computer, i found latest driver for your Ati radeon 9550 agp video card fully compatible with Windows Vista, Xp. Use PC wizard (search and download) this will detect all drivers needed on your computer note name and number for your video card type into search engine IE ati x300 drivers for your operating system xp vista you should be able to download correct drivers

Try restarting the pc in safe mode by tapping the F8 key while re-booting the computer. If the lines are gone it is the display driver.

Ati2mtag causing crash - ATI vid card

Give this a shot - solves the problem for sure:
Right click-mouse over My Computer
Properties
Hardware(Tab)
Device Manager(button)
Click [+] next to System devices
right-mouse on CPU to AGP Controller (or whatever your controller is called, mine was SiS AGP)
Update Driver(button)
Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Next(button)
Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.
Next(button)
Select PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Next(button)
Finish(button)
Reboot.
