I have the same problem. The default announcement doesn't work and I can't record new announcement. And, therefore, the answering machine doesn't pick up the phone calls.

I can't record any messages on my RCA 25205 phone. I first had a problem when answer 1 kept blinking, so I turned it off and tried to start all over. Now I can't record a message. It puts 120 seconds on for me to record and the seconds don't count down. It will not work and acts like it is froze. Any suggestions? Thanks

The information on handset says 'the line is busy' unable to make or receive calls , when i call the phone it just gives ringing tone

The fact that it just rings when you call it indicates your line is open, which could be a wiring issue at a modular jack, or the modular cord between the jack and the phone, if it isn't just that it came unplugged.

I keep an old touch tone phone handy to act as a test phone to rule out a failed phone. With today's network terminations a customer can access a test jack outside your home/premise to test the line provided by the phone company before it heads inside to your phone wiring. If the phone works there at that modular jack, the issue is inside, if it doesn't, the issue is with the line to the phone company.

Once you narrow it down to inside wiring you can inspect any or all modular jacks to make sure the red & green wires are not broken at the screw terminals and that the modular jack wires are indeed firmly tightened to the same color wire terminal screw.

And last, another phone on the same line that is off-line or not hung up could cause the phone company equipment to isolate your line until the phones are hung up for a period of time to restore the line. So check that all phones are hung up, even cordless ones associated with the base on that particular line.

How do I change the message on my answering machine?

Which Uniden phone do you have? for some models, you access the Answering System menu from the base; on others, you need to be holding the handset. The generic steps are below.

On the appropriate part of the unit, make sure that the phone system is in standby (no active calls on any handset). Then press Menu. Use the arrow keys to find the line for Answering System. Press OK. Navigate to a line about Greeting and press OK. You should see (and select a line) for Recording message. You'll be prompted to ensure that you want to record a new message. If you are using the handset, hold the unit about 6" away from your head. After confirming that you wish to record a new message, speak your new message clearly. When you are done, press End. The unit will cut off the recording if your message was too long. Make sure to save the message. Then go back up in the Menu system and look for a line for "Play back Greeting". If the message isn't clear, start over.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the model number of the phone for specifics for your manual. Some DECT phone manuals are available here: http://www.uniden.com.au/australia/cs_operating_manuals_phones.asp .

Hi. My At&t Cordless 2 Hand set Telephone (EL52213) Answering machine (ON) doesn't record incoming messages. The Message window shows 0. The Telephone base is connected with my FAX machine (Teleph

If your Phone service is recording messages, that disconnects your line. You need to have them turn that feature off, OR set the answering machine to answer is less rings, say two or three. If the FAX machine listens to the line, it can still be set at a higher amount of rings, say four, and should still answer any FAX signal as it's sent to the answering machine.

Phone line is busy, but the cordless phone is hung up

If the line is busy, there's a phone off the hook somewhere or there's a bad phone jack or line cord. If this is the only phone on the line, disconnect the AC power adapter from the base and also disconnect the battery in the handset. On both units, press a couple of buttons to drain off stored charge. After a minute or so, reconnect the battery and base power, and see if the line is free. Sometimes, especially in hot weather when lots of people using air conditioners or storms can cause power line glitches, the computer in the phone gets confused. This process resets everything and may clear up the trouble.

If you don't have another phone and the trouble continues after trying the reset, see if you can borrow another phone from someone for testing. If that fixes the trouble you need a new phone.

Your phone line itself might have a problem that is causing your phone service provider to think your line is in use. There may be water in the line or some other fault outside, or some problem on your inside wiring. (A friend had a problem after she plugged in a new phone, and it turned out one of the prongs in the jack had bent and was touching the one next to it. In another case, a phone jack that had gotten wet had corroded and was shorted.)

If you have other phones on the line, disconnect them all from their jacks. Reconnect one and see if the line is free. Then you can reconnect the others, checking each time. This will let you determine which one is causing the problem.

This kind of problem can be frustrating, but it can be solved. Good luck, and thanks for using Fixya!

Unable to leave voice mail, says good-bye

I don't think the voice mail is going bad.

On my 4424D+, I can turn off voice mail.
I use this feature when I'm gone for an extended period of time so I don't come back to 100 VMs.

Dial into your voice mail.
Choose the prompt for Call Answer Mode. (Option 8 on my phone.)
Then choose the prompt for Record Mode. (Option 1 for me.) This allows callers to record voice mails on your line.

Need setup help for ep5962

first set day and time... menu, mailboxes, set day/time, scroll to day, set, select, ok... then scroll to current time, set, dial pad four digits, 2 for am or 7 for pm, select save. now power on line 1 or 2 or both. phone is preprogrammed with 'hello, please leave a message after the tone.' to record your own use menu, mailboxes, select setup 1 or 2, then review/chng oga, then record new oga, then ok. record when screen changes, choose stop when you're done. shortcut: press and hold record, press and release mailbox line x, release when finished. you only record one line at a time, so you can have different messages on each line. even if it's the same, you must record each line. since you can only record one message the shortcut would be useful for an 'out to lunch, be back about 1-30' sort of message. then re-record a standard message when you get back from lunch. 'course, you really don't need an 'out to lunch' message, since people are accustomed to answering machines at any time of day. all the caller needs to know is that 'i can't get to the phone right now.' and they appreciate it when you keep it short.

GE 2-9450 CORDED PHONE PROBLEM

I bet the problem is that you used to have two phone lines and now you only have one line. You cannot program an extension into one of these phones unless both Line1 and Line2 coming into the phone are working- it will act as if the extension you picked is in use, but the actual thing it is complaining about is that Line2 isn't working. The phones might have been working for years on a single phone line as long as they didn't lose power. But you don't have to throw the phones away just because you gave up your second phone line, you can still make them work. (I did it for a 12 phone system.) The way to to it: make a special cable that connects your single incoming phone line to both L1 and L2 on the phone, tricking the phone into thinking both L1 and L2 are working. Then program the extensions into the phones, and go back to using a normal cable so that only Line1 is hooked up. To make this cable: take a normal male to male cable and cut off one end. Then connect both the black and the green wires of the cable to the green post in a standard phone jack (the kind you would surface mount on the wall will work best), and connect both the yellow and red wires to the rec post inside the phone jack. Now plug your incoming phone wire into the phone jack, and plug the wire you connected into the jack into the back of your phone. The phone is probably already blinking red on the intercom, just push the extension number you want it to have, making sure there are no conflicting extensions already in use.
I would reconnect the phone using a normal line so that only Line 1 is "hot", don't leave it on this double-connected cable any longer than you need to in order to program the extension.
Good luck!
