Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a Maytag Series Twelve Model S -59 gallons HRE11250S Hot water heater that-I think needs a new element- When I turn the water on to hot-it comes out cold for a few minutes then real warm. We needed to turn our main water off for a few minutes last night, so I think this may have caused the problem. I do not know how to check to see which element needs to be changed.

It appears your element has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

I have a new AO Smith Electric Hot Water heater. When I turn on the water, at any of my sinks, or my shower, it's very hot for a minute, then it turns lukewarm.

Your water heater may not have been installed correctly. You should get hot water shortly after you turn on the faucet. There may be a defective heating element or temperature controller. Also, the 50 gallon tank may be too large for your application.

Just re[placed the upper and lower element on our hot water heater. That was three hours ago. the water is still cold.

Push in reset button located on upper thermostat.
Push circuit breaker fully off and then fully on.
Make sure tank is filled with water before turning power ON or elements will burn out

I have a GSW Series 5 water heater (electric). I think the heating elements are bad or going bad. The heater is about 12 years old. Its a 40 gallon heater, and I've noticed the amount of hot water is less...

It may be one of 2 elements not working, a thermostat problem, scale build up in tank, to name a few possibilities. You'll need to shut off power to water heater before doing anything to it, and perform a few tests, and check a few things to determine which one is the cause. After power is off, you remove cover(s) on side of tank and peel back the insulation to get access to element(s). Keep in mind that should you need to change one of the elements, or both (assuming it has 2 otherwise you wouldn't have any hot water at all if only 1 element and not working.) This is where it would be good to have a voltage meter ( or multimeter ) and know how to use it. Is that possible? Before you reply, please shut off power and remove cover(s) to be sure whether single or dual element. If it's single, it may just be thermostat adjustment, or faulty, or scale build up around element. Keep in mind that water to tank will need to be shut off and tank drained down below element before removing/replacing. Get back to me with info on single or dual element. Thanks

Energy smart hot water heater not giving ample amount of hot water both elements ohm at 12.5

For manual

You checked ohms, did you check for 240V across lower element when lower element is turned on?

Energy smart electric water heater
has a control box on top of unit. Water heater does not have typical thermostats that can be tested and replaced. Temperature sensors located above each element send information to control box through small black and red wires. Temperature sensor sells for about $40, but there is no test listed that shows how to determine when sensors fail.

Potential problems:
-Temperature sensor is not reading correct temp
-Control box not processing correct temperature information
-Selector on control box set to 2, 3 or 4
-Thermostat temp on control box set lower than 120 degrees F
-Sediment build-up starting to surround lower element so water doesn't circulate (see if drain valve runs full-open

New Rheem electric 50 gallon not heating

Check the elements, if you have access to a meter to check them. If they are getting power to elements and you have no hot water.
The elements are not working correctly. I had some elements check out ok till the thermostat's turned on and the elements didn't heat.
Sounds like the elements are bad.

Water doesn't heat up hot enough

The problem is more than likely not the dishwasher but you water heater. I have this problem because there is a long run of pipe between my dishwasher/sink and my water heater. I have to run about 2 gallons before I get any hot water you can do the same thing to "prime the pump" as it were. Also you may have your water heater set too low to sanitze dishes. This can usually be corrected by turning the nob to "warmer" or "hotter" on your water heater. CAUTION: If you have small children or handicapped individuals in your home who could burn themselves you may want to think twice about turning up the temp at the water heater as the risk of severe burns increases greatly with very hot water coming out of the tap. Some dishwashers have an axuillary heating element in them that adds extra heat to the water before/during the wash cycle if you have done nothing to your water heater or have not had the previously mentioned problems it is possible that this heating element has failed and needs to be replaced. If so best to call a service company and ask for an estimate.

Low amount of hot water

You say a very new water heater. You won't get 40 gallons of hot water from a 40 gallon water heater because the continuing influx of cold water will cool your hot water down. However, it appears that your bottom water heater element needs replacing. If the top element is bad, you'll get no hot water. If your bottom element is bad, you'll get "some" hot water. Try replacing the bottom element. DON'T FORGET to turn off the electricity AND water first (closeby towels are also handy)!
