Question about Western Digital Caviar SE WD5000AAJB - 500GB - 7200rpm - - IDE/EIDE - Internal Plus $25 ... 500 GB Hard Drive

External Harddrive not recognized.

I have a Western Digital Harddrive, model WD5000AAJB Caviar SE, the 500GB model. It's only about a year old. I tested it when I first got it with my old laptop (A Dell 130B or something along those lines) It worked fine then. However I went away to college and didn't bring it with me. I came back home and got a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 1520) and now my computer won't recognize it. The Harddrive turns on, as well as the fan, so I know power is getting to it, however, the harddrive doesn't "Think." The R/W led light that used to come on when I connected the HD to the computer doesn't flash anymore, and my computer doesn't recognize it. I've tried plugging the HD into other computers - an HP PC, and two other Dell Laptops but no dice. Is there a way to force my computer to recognize it? Or just make it work in general?

I just had a similar problem, but I see yours was posted in January. Don't know if you solved it or if you trashed the drive.
The drive itself is failing. No noises, no grinding, it just fails to be recognized by the computer. Not sure what can be done other than attempt to recover files with a software recovery system. I'm troubleshooting mine, so if you still have yours but don't want the hassle I'll take it off your hands! :-)

I looking for a pcb boad for hd western digital

That would be on another WD2500JB Caviar harddrive

Either that, or start looking on the internet posting -
WD2500JB PCB Board, and see what search hits come up.

Here,.....let me try.............

http://www.hdd-parts.com/18100096.html

Before you replace it, let me ask........
1) Was it in a Desktop PC?

2) Was it in an external harddrive?

External harddrive?
Then suggest you obtain a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3883498&CatId=2780

In an external harddrive there is a small interface circuit board.

The Harddrive plugs into the small interface circuit board, and the USB cable is attached to the small interface circuit board.

It is this small interface circuit board that usually goes bad.

The external enclosure is just like the case of the external harddrive.
Has a USB cable going to a small interface circuit board, and the harddrive plugs into it.

Can we/should we update our bios?

I would not update the BIOS if you aren't haveing problems. If you use WinXP you should have no problems updating the Hard Drive to the 500GB, If you format the disk using the NTFS File system when you install windows, and it only recognizes 137GB of the 500GB, then update, but you shouldn't have any problems. thanks for any ratings

Hi, looks like your usb drive has died. Try it on another pc / laptop first. If it still does not work, you will need to purchase drive data reader while will allow you to access the data. Most pc stores carry them. Cost about 50 euros. Best of luck.
