  • Ghost1341 Jan 16, 2009

I have unplugged checked all connections, The drum starts to turn in dianostic mode but after a couple of spins it goes to flashing F28, and as I said this only started after I cleared the F21 code

  • Ghost1341 Jan 16, 2009

I think this is futile the machine spins it rotates it spins in different amounts of time. One it will rotate for 2 minutes the next for 5 minutes, the time after that maybe a minute what a piece of junk.

  • Ghost1341 Jan 16, 2009

Again AS I SAID the drum rotates

  • Ghost1341 Jan 16, 2009

This is a front load Machine not a top load

  • Ghost1341 Jan 16, 2009

Could this problem have been caused by tipping the machine forward to access the pump from the back???????

  • Ghost1341 Jan 16, 2009

I have also tried that and even left it unplugged all day while I was at work still comes up with F28 at varying time intervals

  • Ghost1341 Jan 16, 2009

Is there a fuse or breaker inside the machine?

  • Ghost1341 Jan 16, 2009

I do not have the owners manual how do you re program the ccu

  • Ghost1341 Jan 16, 2009

Is there a way to re-program the CCU? Someone posted that this could be done but I do not have the manual.

  • Ghost1341 Jan 17, 2009

I had the whole pump assy out and cleaned it and reinstalled.

There is no way to reprogram CCU in an easy way, you need image that is not available, and an eprom programmer.

Just replace ccu if it is faulty.

find parts and diagrams by entering model number here.

I took off the front panel of the machine and opened the drain pipe. There was a sock clogging the pipe. I removed it, cleaned everything, and then put it back together.

Hi!
Error F21 means long drain time. When you checked the discharge stream during pumpout, was it the same diameter as the hose and forceful?
Also, pull out the pump cleanout and look in at the impeller. It should be clear or debris, with nothing wound around it. Should have four impeller vanes. These can get broken off by coins.
Finally, remove the discharge hose from the pump, pucker up and blow. If, after clearing the initial slug of water, the hose doesn't blow free and clear, then you have something in there.

You need to tip the washer back a little and remove the three screws on the front bottom cover. There would be a large white drain value, turn and open the drain (make sure you have a pan or something to catch the water and any junk inside) to remove the water. Attached to the drain would be a black hose with an expanded section, squeeze this to find any loose socks, under clothes etc. This error is a drainage problem, it is easy to fix yourself. I hope this helps!

    Ask for any clarifications

  • Rylee Smith
    Rylee Smith Jan 16, 2009

When you take the bottom front cover off, there is a SERVICE MANUAL in a bag attached to the backside of the bottom cover which explains what all of the error codes mean.

    Thanks

Yes its quite possible.what you r thinking of.Check to see whether power or exact voltage is getting to the washing machine. Is it plugged in? Has a fuse blown or is a circuit breaker tripped?if its getting power but the low voltage then this proble can be possible.needs to be checked with a voltmeter.to locate the loose connection on the board of the machine.

I'll suggest this as I didn't see it when scanning quickly above, but, unplug the complete unit for awhile, if 5 minutes doesn't work, try 30, then maybe an hour. If it doesn't reset after that, make sure you did not break any wiring connectors or connections when you cleaned the filters/pump (assuming you had to break into the unit from the back.).

For a Operation Manual, go to www.managemyhome.com . You will need to register, but it's free.

Only thing is, it will probably only tell you how to use the washer, not service or reprogram it. I am trying to download now just to check.

I am going to be real suspect that there is a broken connector, or a bad door switch in the unit as someone else had suspected.

  • Mark Egan Jan 16, 2009

    From the manual -

"Rinse," "Cycle Complete" and "Add a Garment"
illuminated or "F21" on display (Drain Problem)
Select PAUSE/CANCEL twice to cancel the cycle. Unplug
    washer or disconnect power.
    Check the following:
    Is the drain hose kinked?
    Is the drain hose frozen?
    Is the drain hose clogged?
Is the drain hose more than 96" (2.4 m) above the floor?
Any other Status light combination (Electrical Problem)
Select PAUSE/CANCEL twice to cancel the cycle. Select
DRAIN/SPIN if there is excessive water in the washer.
Re-select cycle and press START. If the problem remains, call
    for service.

I am going to suggest the Pause/Cancel twice routine, as well as the Drain/Spin routine if there is water in the tub. You've got to get it empty of water before the controller will reset (if there is water in it.).
Otherwise, and Pause/Cancel reset might just reset the controller, period.

Not pumping out the water - if the washer cannot pump out the water, the washer will not be able to spin...check the pump for not pumping.
Door not locking - if the door will not lock, the washer will not enter a spin mode. See if the lock light is lite on the consol.
Broken wires at one of the out off balance switches or a bad switch itself.
A fairly common trouble maker has been a burnt diode on the main control board. See diode R11.
If this has happened to your main control board ( in the consol ) , the wax motor in the door lock assembly is drawing too much hydro and must be replacing at the same time as the control board. The wax motor can check, appear and test ok but will fail when working throughout the cycle.
Appliance Repair Aid does not recommend repairing this board, replacing the board along with the wax motor or the entire door lock assembly is the best way to ensure a proper repair. Some info on the burnt part(s) of the board is linked here if you decide to try to service the board itself.

    It doesn't pump or spin
    It pumps, but doesn't spin
It spins only with the lid closed

    It doesn't pump or spin

If it doesn't pump water out or spin, check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follows:

    • If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. If the pump belt is broken or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt.

    • If the motor isn't running, the lid switch may be defective. If so, the washing machine can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

    It pumps, but doesn't spin

If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:

    • The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

    • The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

    • A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

    • The clutch may be worn. If your washer is a GE, it may use a clutch to come up to the proper spin speed. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.

    • The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

    • The transmission may not be shifting properly. Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem, you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

    • The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.

It spins only with the lid closed

For safety, washing machines are made so that they spin only with the lid closed. The lid switch prevents the spinning action when the lid is up.

You can call whirlpool for service but the tech sheet f28 has a communication problem from you computer to the motor..

The communication between the Central Control Unit (CCU) and
the Motor Control Unit (MCU) cannot be sent correctly.

Possible Causes/Procedure
1. Unplug washer or disconnect power.
2. Check wire harness connections to the MCU, the motor, and
Central Control Unit (CCU).
Check connections of the CCU board within the housing.
Make sure all grounding switches are engaged.
3. Check the drive system for any worn or failed components.
4. Plug in washer or reconnect power.
5. Verify CCU operation by running a Diagnostic Test or any
cycle.
6. Check the MCU by looking for operations of the drive motor.
7. Check the drive motor for powered rotations.
8. Check that the serial harness at the MCU is not mounted
upside down. The wires should be to the left when facing
the MCU connectors.

F28 error is means its :--------
The communication between the Central Control Unit (CCU) and
the Motor Control Unit (MCU) cannot be sent correctly.

Possible for its causes and the solutions to resolve the problem
1. Unplug washer or disconnect power.
2. Check wire harness connections to the MCU, the motor, and
Central Control Unit (CCU).
– Check connections of the CCU board within the housing.
– Make sure all grounding switches are engaged.
3. Check the drive system for any worn or failed components.

If it is new call for service

and for F-21 ERROR   remove the front panel, draine the water, clean out the filter, replace everything and run a test load,if  it still fails  to drain.  take everything apart again and check the pump motor (just to the right of the filter, it twists off). The motor had a small sock tangled in it. remove that clear it.and the error will get cleared. thanks.

I have a whirlpool duet sport that is displaying F28 code. I have replaced the ccu unit now what do I do. It fills but will not wash, drains but will not spin HELP PLEASE!

For the F28 error code:
First, check the wiring harness connections to the MCU, the Motor, and the CCU. Make sure all the connections are tight and there are no ground wires off. Then check the connections of the CCU board within the housing.

If the wiring connections are fine then It would be a good idea to order both, as both components have been problematic for the error code F28.

F21 error

This is a Long Drain Issue. Likely that something is stuck in the pump trap. Take off the mottom tree screws under the drum panel. This will remove the drum panel on the front. From under neither you can see the drain pipe trap. Unscrew the trap cap in the from. Clean out all debrieF and re-install. This should do it.

F9E1 or F21
  • When users observe the F9E1 or F21 error code in their Whirlpool washer's display, it indicates a drain pump system error. The drain hose should be checked to ensure that it has been installed properly and not having a blockage.

The SUD message relates to overdose of detergent detected during the Wash Cycle.
This may signify a bad pump, an extra heavy load, excessive detergent or excessive suds.
If too much detergent was used, run the washer through a Rinse/Spin cycle, then a Normal cycle, without adding any detergent. This should clear the unit of the excess detergent.
Check the drain hose and make sure it is not plugged or kinked. this seems to be the reason as to why your unit is not fixed even after trying to solve F21......

F28 is a communication error which usually means there is a connection that has come loose. Removing the top and unpplugging and replugging the connectors in will fix 75% of these codes. If the bottom toe panel is not on it will also give you an F28.
Good luck

f21 is no drain error code, you have to take off the bottom panel, you'll need a shop vac or something to catch water, put some towels down under the pump, the middle of the pump unscrews so you can clean it out, turn the center part counterclockwise slowly, when the water starts leaking out vac it up as it leaks out, doesn't take long to drain it,when it's drained remove the center piece and you'll find some lovely things in the catch, feel around inside the pump to make sure you get everything out and nothing is hitting the impeller or stuck on it,if it doesn't drain after that and the pump just humms you'll need a new pump, good luck,if i can help you with anything else let me know
