Question about Samsung SIR-S4040R DirecTV DTV Receiver / 35-Hours Video Recorder

Set Up for DVR

I recently acquired a S4040R that is replacing a standard receiver(D11-500). However, it is requiring two incoming cables for Sat 1 & 2 and I only have one. Can I use a splitter or would I need to upgrade to a new dish to get the two incoming lines for this unit so it will be fully functional and allow me to use the features?

Hello: If you have only one incoming cable, just hook it up on SAT 1. What happens is that you will only be able to record what you're watching. If you want two incoming cables, just change the LNB to a dual LNB if you have a round dish. If you have an oval dish, most likely has a multiswitch LNB, so all you need to do is hook up another cable to that LNB and run it to the receiver and put it on SAT 2.
This way, you can watch one program and record another program on a dif. channel at the same time. Either way, you need to take out the LNB from the dish for one or the other option. It's best to contact your service provider and get a tech, to do the changes. It's not costly.

TV1 seems fine while TV2 continues trying to acquire the satellite signal. I've reset it several times via the front panel and by unplugging but nothing works.

You may have a loose connection from your TV 2 feed. You can check the cables on the back of the receiver to make sure they are secure. Depending upon your installation, you could have 1 or 2 separators back feeding your TV 2 from the receiver to your TV 2. In the center of the receiver you have your TV 2 coax port. From that TV 2 port, check all points of connections to make sure the cables are secure and tight. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you may have a bad connector or switch, which would require a technician to repair. I hope this helps.

Want to run my dtv receiver through new digital converter box.

You will not be able to record local station from a DTV converter connected thru a directv receiver unless there is a a/v input on the directv samsung receiver. Also check the user manual for this receiver if recording from an external source such as a DTV converter box is possible. The answer to seperating the DTV converter box from the directv samsung receiver is possible if your tv has multiple inputs. Try connecting the DTV box to the RF input and the directv samsung box to an a/v input then change inputs using the tv remote. you will need an av cable (yellow/ red/white) for the directv box and a rf jumper cable for the DTV box.

The SAT button will flash three times. Now press the record button until the remote address for TV2 changes to the number you chose. When accomplished exit out of the screen with th TV1 remote and you should now be able to control TV 2. As a precaution ensure the remote antenna is on the back of the receiver. Your hard drive may have crashed. Can you hear any disk activity when you plug in the unit? The hard drive can be replaced, but probably better to either just get a replacement unit (you can get them on eBay for $40 or less) or upgrade to a newer receiver.

I had the vary same problem, One solution is to remove the s-cable and use the analog video out, I have read lots of forums about this, it works for most people, No one seems to know why the s-cable causes pixelation on sat 2 input, and can't find anybody that can fix it completly, check forums at weak knees.com and tivo comunity. Good luck. ddftoc.
