Perhaps your hard disk is not the first device. Maybe there is no need to reinstall Windows and definitely to lose data.

Can you open BIOS settings and check if hard disk is the first boot device?

Here is a link to your problem, its kind of high tech stuff, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321626

You might want to try putting your windows cd in the drive and restart you computer, hopefully it should boot up off the disk, than you can click 'Fix errors' or something like that. You could also reinstall windows, but you well loose all your data. Good luck and me know how you made out. And please rate mty answer.

Good Day,
As I see it, the OS which is Windows 7 has automatic updates turned on, thus Windows Media Player has also been updated. If you have quitted or stopped the installation or "personalizing Windows" it may have this effect of slowing your system down.
To fix this you may restore the system at least a day before it bogged down.(boot into safe mode first) after which see the results, and let it re-update, and let it finish shall it show that screen again. Depending on your system configuration, Windows Media Player setup may take a while.Just be patient.
Hope this helps. Thank you for using Fixya.

All of the icons from the screen disappeared!

try to reboot your computer into safe mode.

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
  1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
  2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.
Then click start
click run
type in msconfig
uncheck everything under the startup tab except your antivirus
and reboot
