I have a Snapper self-propelled lawnmower and The starter cord will not pull out to get it started. What do I do next?

Hi Patricia,
There is probably a safety lever that has to be pulled back toward the handle in order to release the flywheel. (This lever is on the top side of handle.) Once you have it firmly against the handle it should start. To stop the mower, simply release the lever. There may also be a 2nd lever to engage the self-propelled (located under the handle). It may be difficult to start with this one pulled.

The pull gets stuck halfway up. Feels like it's tangled inside where the cord retracts. Is that possible?

It's possible it could be tangled, but more than likely you just need to oil the drive shaft. Dirt and debris and grass can get caught up in there and keep the shaft from spinning and the blade from turning.

If you turn your mower over and apply some oil or WD-40 on the shaft where it disappears into the body of the mower, then spin the blade (carefully!) and shoot some more oil in, the blade should begin to turn easier, and that should take care of your problem.

Toro self propelled 22 inch recycler lawn mower start pull cord is "stuck"

Casey,

My son just bought a new Toro self propelled 22" recycler and has had problems on two different occasions. The mower just bogs down to a stop and when he tried to pull the starter cord, it was very VERY difficult to pull. At first I thought the engine had seized up for some reason (no oil?), but we found the problem.

First, disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug (to avoid the engine starting); tip the mower on its side and check very carefully the pulley and transmission belt. In his case, a piece of wood had gotten stuck between the belt and the pulley. Removing it fixed the problem (now he mows a little higher so as not to get so close to any debris). (We did have one further problem after that - the engine would not start - not even fire. After pulling and pulling, checking for gas, and checking that the air filter was cleean, we decided to check if the cylinder was flooded - we removed the spark plug, wiped and dried if off, and replaced it. It started right away.)

This belt 'n pulley arrangement isn't the best idea, if you ask me.

Good luck.

Starting issues. Can't pull cord.

Make sure your flywheel brake is not engaged or the cover is hindering the mechanism somehow after it is installed
