there is an electronic solenoid near where the drainhose connects to the sump that changes the waterflow direction from recirculate(washing), to evacuate (draining). this is electronically controlled by the timer. you can test the power leads at the solenoid for voltage when it sould be draining. if none then the timer is faulty. if there is voltage then the solenoid is faulty. if the solenoid is engageing, then the water diverter is faulty. if the water diverter is broken, replace the dishwasher.
overflowing is another problem of its own. the water level float/ sensor is not working and could be caked with detergent. work the float from the inside of the dishwasher, it should move freely. if so, then there is a switch connected to the float on the underside. test it with an ohmmeter. if bad replace it. if it is an electronically timed water level control then it could be a problem with the timer as well, but with hotpoint they are usually manual.

Dishwasher fills up with water put wont go into wash cycle and wont drain

your drain hose is probably plugged to the drain especially if it goes through the garbage disposal first, remove drain hose from dishwasher at the disposer and see if its plugged,if so unplug obstruction, then start it and put hose in sink and press drain/cancel and see if it drains now

Water won't drain

There is a drain hose for your dishwasher that often gets clogged. I would try this first. Remove the drain hose and clean it out. reinstall the hose and your dishwasher will drain. The dishwasher should have a panel to remove and then comes out easily, just be careful not to pull it out too far. Go to google or youtube and type how to remove or install dishwasher hose or valve and you will find visual aids that way. Good luck

Does not drain. Water stays in the bottom.

If there is an air gap (located in the sink, near the faucet), check to see if it is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there is anything blocking inside. Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher might not drain properly.

If the drain hose is clogged, the dishwasher would not drain. If there is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher.

Note: If you recently had a garbage disposer installed, it is common to overlook removing the drain plug.

Some models have two impellers inside the pump - one, wash impeller, takes care of the wash cycles, the other, drain impeller, drains the water out. If the drain impeller is broken (broken blades, shaft), the dishwasher would not drain. Replace any broken pump components.

Dishwasher wont drain

hello there
A clog in the drain line or air gap (if there is one) is the usual reason that a dishwasher won't drain. Often the problem is at the point where the drain line attaches to the garbage disposer or household drain line. If you remove this line, you can clear any debris from the hose or hose connection. Be sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher again.
do not forget to rate the solution,
thanks for using FixYa

Whirlpool dishwasher

Well you have three things to look at
simple things first. Is the drain hose clogged Gunk builds up in these hoses and can cause the pump to fail after awhile. if connected to garbage disposal .... is this draining.Take the hose off and clean or blow or replace.
Filter clogged or missing, The filter keeps the pump from getting gooberd up. small pieces of plastic and glass or whatever will either kill your pump or just jamb it up.
can you hear the pump trying to work????
Quiet turn everything off and listen for the pump to work.
