Pulse and adaptive def actuall work in tandem with one another. what happens is the computer will put the refrig into a short def cycle and test how long it takes the termination switch to open this determines when it is time for the unit to go into a full term def the next time. adaptive defrost looks for the number of door openings and how long it takes for the def termination switch to open during a regular defrost. most units will go into def every -12 hours with adaptive if the conditions are right it can go as long as 2 or 3 days between def cycles. both systems are very relaible and trouble free. the pulse defrost is available on higer end electronic control refrig and is also adaptive defrost system as well. whirlpool also has adaptive defrost only available on their midline units as well as some higher end manual control units.\\
sorry for the defrost class peyton..

Defected DEFROST HEATER can cause frost build up on the panel at the back of the freezer, and freezer stop cooling and ice frozen on unit so air could not flow to refrigerator side.Water will coming out caused of unbalanced freezing, and causing the flooding of water in the floor. You must change this defroster heater assembly so it will works normal again..
Heavy Frost on the Coils
This is good! This indicates a defrosting system failure which is a simple control problem. It also means that the sealed system (compressor, evaporator coil, and all associated tubing) is fine as wine in summertime. Defrost system problems are easy fixes that anyone with a pulse can do with maybe just a little help from their friends. The problem will either be the defrost timer (or Adaptive Defrost Control board, if so equipped), the defrost thermostat, or the defrost heater. The Whirlpool Gold refrigerator is not cooling and the bottom freezer has ice formed on the back of the freezer. I purchased the refrigerator in February 2009.

If you can hear the fan running in the freezer you have a defrost issue. Depending on the Model number it can be a timer, adaptive defrost board, a bi-metal themostat, or heater.

Fridge side stays cold for about 3 weeks or less and loose temperature, turn off for 1 hour and its back to normal.

Some newer refrigerators have been using an electronic board instead of an mechanical defrost timer. The adaptive defrost control does the same job as the defrost timer ( shuts off the refrigerator cooling items and redirects the power to the defrost heater for the defrosting cycle, then redirects the power to the compressor and fans to come back on when the defrost cycle is over ). This adaptive defrost system is a bit different when testing, normally speaking if the defrost heater and defrost thermostat ohm ok, we replace the adaptive defrost board.

The freezer works but the refrigerator side isn't cold enough

either the evaporator is iced over and the fan cant pass the cold air, then you need to check the defrost heater on the evaporator, the defrost control be it a timer or adaptive type of control,or possibly the damper vent door between the freezer and refrigerator isn't opening to let the cold air thru from the freezer

Freezer works but frig not cold.

Probably a defrost problem. See if there is any frost inside the freezer. If yes, then it probably is the defrost timer. If the unit does not use a timer, it could be the adaptive defrost control. Might also be the defrost heater or defrost termination thermostat, but I would doubt that on a Whirlpool

Freezer wont defrost and fridge not cold

Better solution is to replace the defrost element, defrost timer,or defrost thermostat, one of these are not working and when replaced will fix the problem.

Side by side whirlpool refridgerator GD5SHA is no longer cooling

Your refrigerator has an Adaptive defrost board inside the fresh food compartment that is the number one reason I think your refrigerator is not cooling. Reading your post you mentioned this just suddenly began to happen. Can you hear the compressor running? Is your fans blowing inside the freezer and below the refrigerator? Can you feel warm air coming from back and under refrigerator or cold air blowing inside freezer? Click on link below and enter your model in search feature. You will see 36 similar choices, just make sure you choose one that has refrigerator beside the model number. When you get to the correct page choose photo 10 control parts click it and you will see the Adaptive defrost listed in photo as item 6. Let me know those other things I asked in this message so I will be able to help you better, Thanks Sea Breeze
