After playing a movie for a little while..maybe 1/4 through, it starts to skip, then it freezes for a moment and then continues on like there was no problems. It will play the dvd fine for a little while then do it again...this continues on through the movie. I've cleaned with a laser disc cleaner, I've done the little black button trick (which solved the loading but not really loading problem) But I still can't figure out why this problem still exists. My kids use this player more than I do as we travel between states alot. I through one out and bought this one because the first one I was watching was doing the same thing...now this one...I'm not sure why, what is causing it or how to fix it...please help...

Mt SD-1800 does the same thing, plays for awhile and then gets stuck. I took it apart and cleaned the rails and the optical lens but no help. I noticed that the head did not slide back and forth without cogging. It turns out that the little pinion gear on the motor was cracked. Every revolution it would catch on the tooth by the crack. I doubt that there are replacement parts available.
Hi. What I am trying to establish from my last question is whether the laser has become heat sensitive or whether there is a bit of dust buildup on the spindle table that might be causing the disc to have excessive wobble.
If the disc has excessive wobble, then the machine will have trouble tracking the outer tracks and will constantly skip as you have described after say 30 to 45 minutes.
If the laser has become heat sensitive then the same problem could potentially occur - The only difference being that if you were to restart the movie at that point, then the skipping would continue even at the beginning of the movie.
The first problem (wobble) is easy to fix - Clean the spindle table, the second problem may render the unit uneconomical to repair.
Remove and replace the graphite grease from the laser transport worm
gear assembly (use the correct Technics stuff), replace the worm gear
drive belt, and ensure that the tension spring on the C-shaped plastic
piece that rides the gear is OK
