Hellow, i am selva from Bangalore, India. I have problem with my 160 gb external maxtor hdd. I conect hdd 2 system but it's not showing in my computer. but usb device is dedecting & given msg. 4 your usb mass storage drive is dedected but not installed ready 2 use. i need solution 4 truble shooting...

you could disassemble the case and remove the drive. it could then be connect via an external controller such as(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2477926&CatId=3770) and test if the drive itself is good in which case it is the controller in the case.
cheapest way I can think of to diagnose these external enclosures

it is usual, that you wont be able to access entire 160gb...certain amount of disk space will be reserved in the HDD for boot sector...

change usb cable.if doesn't work your usb interface is bad.(on hdd)

My External HDD of Western Digital (500 GB) not detecting by Win-XP SP-2. But at the same machine another External HDD of Western Digital (160 GB) is detecting and functioning well.

go to my computer p[roperty then hardware -> device amnager then uninstall usb drivers from it then install aagain.
then connect your harddisk then it found.

You probably have conficker worm because it stops your pc from reading usb's or any external HDD. Or the worm might of infected your HDD since it spreads through usb and internet. Seriously you should get your PC scanned just incase. P.S. Its just a possibility.
