Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-T1 Digital Camera

Lens cover closed

My husband dropped my camera!!! The words "LENS COVER CLOSED" display on the screen regardless if the lens cover is open or not. I pushed the reset button, still nothing. I can view pictures but I cannot take new ones. Battery is brand new. My warranty is long gone. I can't imagine 'dumping' more money into this camera, yet I paid too much for it to just give up. Any suggestions?

Re: Lens cover closed

This is easy to fix. in fact, i just did it on my camera about 2 minutes ago and came back to this post because i was originally looking for a solution myself. anyway, you have to be a little bit rough with the camera to fix it. on the outer lens cover you will notice that there is a metal cover on top of the plastic slider. you need to pry the two apart. there is some seriously sticky tape that is holding the metal cover to the plastic, so you need to be careful that you don't rip the whole thing off. once inside you will see a copper contact that (when you slide the lens cover) makes contact with another piece of metal. when i took a look at mine, it was covered in a bunch of lint. i used a q-tip to clean both contacts and then made sure that they were properly aligned. after that, i slid the lens cover back down and voila! works everytime now. use some superglue to put the metal cover back on again.

I'm just shooting in the dark, but have you tried taking the batteries out then putting them back in again. Also, you might want to look through the Sony website for an e-mail address that you could wite a question and/or ask for help/advice.

My camera turns on by itself even with the slide in front in the closed position. The screen then shows the warning that the lens cover is closed. When I open and reclose the lens cover in 10 or so...

Most likely some dirt, dust, or other particle is jamming the lens opening gears. You can try to spray some compressed air into the lens assembly, hopefully dislodging whatever is obstructing the lens cover. If this doesn't work, the camera will have to be serviced, which can be expensive. If the compressed air doesn't work, and you decide to have it fixed, get an estimate first. Often the cost of repair justifies going ahead and purchasing another camera.
Good luck, thanks for using FixYa, and hope this helps!

The lens cover does not open all the way. I have to use my fingernail to do it.

It is either bent or has grit and dirt in between the slides. Try using canned compressed air, such as you use to clean a computer keyboard with, to blow air between the slides. If that does not work, even though you will have to be very careful, while the lens cover is closed put a single drop of WD40 on the cover and spread it with a Qtip over the entire cover surface. Holding the camera, front facing down, try turning it on and off several times. If that frees the lens cover, turn the camera off and wipe the surface of the closed lens cover with a soft tissue to clean the WD40 from the surface. Make sure then that your lens is clean before using the camera. If the lens cover is bent, then none of this will work.

I dropped the camera and now the lens cover does not stay open or closed. It no longer clickes when it is open or closed.

clicking is done when the lens unit/camera i ok,when the camera dropped lens unit must be damaged,so it should be serviced/replace with a new unit

Lens cover

Well, I just looked at one, it is not easy to get to the front cover. Everything is removed from the back of the camera. The display, both circuit boards and the battery compartment have to be removed first. You may do better locating another camera, eBay is always a good start.

Lens cover

I know this is an old post, but for those who want to fix it themselves: try blowing lots of compressed air around the open lens shutter to clean the mechanism. Or use a hair dryer for a few seconds (don't want to heat up the camera). Also with the lens barrel extended and pointed downward, tap the lens barrel with a pencil while you extend and retract the lens by powering the camera on and off. A grain of sand in the mechanism is usually the culprit, and you want to try to dislodge it.

You can open it up, but only as a very last resort. The above procedures usually work if you try them enough. But for those particularly nasty stuck mechanisms, here's an example repair on a Canon Powershot A400 (do this at your own risk):

Lens cover sticks closed.

If you're careful this problem is a relatively easy fix for many digital cameras. The design of the lens cover mechanism is usually simple and very similar throughout camera brands. Here's an example fix for a Canon A400 with similar problems:
