Laptop Touchpad - cursor random dragging problem

This is HP Pavillion Entertainment model of Laptop, bought 2 months ago from Best Buy. All settings are default settings. While typing, the cursor gets dragged randomly without touchpad being touched. This problem has started off late. While typing this message also, the cursor moved suddenly from this line to other lines/ fields. Highly annoying.

Thanks very much. But in this laptop Fn F7 is for brightness. Fn F1 for windows help, Fn F2 for print etc. Still wondering how to go about it. Really highly irritating problem, you know!! Anyway, thanks once again for your response.

    Thank you for your suggestions.
I did try reducing the sensitivity by 50% than default value. But still it is giving me same trouble. One of my friends said that it might have to do with windows vista, he had faced same problem. He suggested to modify typing style such that fingures do not come near to the touchpad. This may reduce the error volume. But I can not accept it whole heartedly. We can not pay for a faulty system.

On my acer all I have to do is press function F7, Function is the button with 'Fn' on it. I am not sure if that works for HP, but its worth a try. Also, is there a switch near the touchpad? Sometimes there is one that switches the touch pad on and off. You can also try other Fn(function) F1 or Fn F2 etc. and see if one of the other "f" buttons work.  I hope this helps, let me know how you made out. Good Luck!

Did you try adjusting the sencetivity settings in control panel?

    click 'start'
    'control panel'

I am not sure if its under poining devices, or synamatic device. There may even be a setting under 'accessibility options'.
Did you look for a switch near the touch pad?

Now I am determined to find a solution, whats the make/model?

I want to turn off the touchpad

HP and Compaq Presario laptop computers are made by the same company, so the hardware on certain models of each brand might be nearly identical. Many newer laptops, for example, use identical technology to control the touchpad, which in turn controls your mouse cursor. If you want to disable this touchpad use the software already installed on your PC.

Click "Start." Click "Control Panel." Click "Mouse." Click the "Device Settings" tab. Click on the listing for the HP touchpad to highlight it. Click the "Disable" button to disable the HP touchpad on your Compaq Presario laptop computer.

My keyboard keeps writing out of order - putting words infront of stuff i have previously typed - toshiba Satellite laptop

Does the laptop have a touchpad below the keyboard?
Usually the hand position when you type is such, that it's very easy to involuntarily lighlty touch the touchpad with the base of your thumb, usually the right one, when you move the hand over the touchpad, mostly in the up-left direction.
This causes the cursor to move to some place up and to the left, resulting in the next characters you type being put in that place :)
Try to keep your hands a little bit more above the touchpad when you type. Also, many touchpad drivers have settings for ignoring light touches/drags, try looking into these settings in your pointing device properties.

Jumping cursor

You need to adjust the sensitivity of the touchpad

In the TouchPad Properties window you can access additional TouchPad preferences.

»To access the TouchPad Properties window, use the TouchPad to select Start > Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Mouse > Device Settings, and then select the Settings button.

(If you follow this path using an optional external mouse, the TouchPad Properties window may be unavailable.)

"sticky" mouse on compaq laptop

Unless your left mouse button has been severely damaged, it is unlikely that a loose button is the cause of your problem. More likely, it is your touchpad. Chances are your touchpad is set to click when tapped. Oversensitive touchpads can click randomly when you're dragging your finger across the touchpad.

To test this, position your cursor over a link (or other button) but don't press the left mouse button. Instead, lightly tap the touchpad itself. If the link or button is clicked, go to your Control Panel and adjust the Mouse options so your touchpad no longer clicks when tapped. It's usually a setting titled "tap to click" or something along those lines.

Javabytes
