While booting up, just after BIOS lists computer peripherals (prior to WIndows logo), press F8 repeatedly. In the menu pick Safe Mode (Command Prompt). If the blue screen of death doesn't appear, type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. This might fix some hard disk issues that were preventing normal boot up.

Sd card reader

This can have multiple causes.

I assume the drivers are not installed for the device.
You can download them on:

Simply enter "Aspire 5630" (without quotes) into the "Search by product model" text box and klick on the "Aspire 5630" that pops up in the product selection.

Then below select your operating system (currently only Windows Vista and Windows XP are supported).

Klick on the "download" link in the Card Reader row and save the file e.g. on the desktop.
Then extract the zip-file, start Setup.exe and follow the on screen instructions.
Maybe a restart is required after the installation.

If your card reader still does not work, then the next step would be to check if the "device manager" in the system settings recognizes the device or displays some exclamation marks.

But without any further information (kind of Operating System, Any error messages, what you have tried, ... ) it is very difficult to help.

If this answer helped, please mark it as answered. Thanks.

Windows 7

Each computer you purchase comes with a Home Edition Windows 7 product, unless otherwise stated in the computer's details.
To upgrade your edition, you must purchase a new license key, such as an Enterprise license key.
You no longer need to install an upgrade to promote your computer.
Instead, Windows 7 has a "Windows Anytime Upgrade" utility that allows you to enter a new license and promote your computer's operating system.

Click the Windows "Start" button.
Type "windows anytime upgrade" in the search text box.
Press "Enter."
This command starts the upgrade wizard for Windows 7.
Click the "Windows Anytime Upgrade" option, and select "Enter an Upgrade Key" in the options section.
This activates a text box where you type your new license key.
Type the Enterprise key in the license text box labeled "Upgrade Key."
Click "Next."
Windows verifies your license key is valid and tells you that you must wait several minutes to activate your new product license.
Click "Reboot" after your new product activates.
When you reboot, notice the new product edition "Enterprise" is shown in the Windows splash screen.

Black screen on start up with blinking cursor

Chances are, the operating system is corrupt.

Solution 1
1. Restart the computer, before entering the windows, press F8 to open the Windows Advanced Options Menu.
2. To enter the windows, select Last Known Good Configuration - enter. If that fails, repeat the process, select the Directory services restore mode. If that fails, repeat the process, select the Debugging mode.
3. After successfully entering the windows, press START - All programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore. Restore to a date when the computer is in normal condition.

Solution 2 (if the above solution fails)
Repair windows operating system with a bootable CD

Windows XP
1. Insert the bootable operating system CD, and restart
2. Perform booting from the CD room - Enter
3. Press enter - F8 - press R to repair the operating system
4. Wait until the process is complete. Finish

Windows Vista or Seven
1. Insert the bootable operating system CD, and restart
2. Perform booting from the CD room - Enter
3. Select Repair your computer - System Restore. If that fails, repeat the process 1, 2
4. Select Repair your computer - CompletePC restore. Restore a computer from CompletePC Backup Image.

Solution 3 (only for Win XP)
When done repair the operating system, drive C is detected: unknown or not formatted, it means the C drive for bad sectors.

To fix hard disk bad sectors, use the software HDD Regenerator bootable CD.

When I reboot the laptop, it goes through the entire thing til is gets to the windows start page, then it stays there stuck with the hourglass turning over and over

you'll need to start your computer in Safe Mode (hit F8 right after the Toshiba startup logo dissapears and from the menu select Safe Mode). Then, run an antivirus and antimalware scan (I recomend using Avast free antivirus and Malwarebytes). Also, you may want to uninstal any software or updates that you installed prior to this problem apeared. Usually, it's either a virus/malware infection, or a program is interfering with the normal bootup of your system.

Safe mode business

safe mode automatically comes up when you didn't shut down properly. Just select boot as normal or last known good configuration then you are good to go.

uninstall any new hardware or software you have recently installed to cause the problem in the first place. If you haven't installed anything then windows should just start normally.

good luck

It won't work!

Pop an XP CD in and Boot from it.. When it gets to the point where it says "Press "Enter" now to install Windows or Press "R" for the Repair console"? press R.. This will take you to a Command C: prompt after it asks which "Windows installation you want to access" Hit 1 Then Enter (generally for C:), If you had a Password it will have to be entered and prompt. If it asks and no passwrd is there hit enter. When you get to C:/ type: "fixboot" And hit enter.. Y for yes/enter. It asks for verification. Then Type" fixmbr "and hit enter. Same verification. Then type "chkdsk/p"and force checkdisk to run even though the file system may have apeared to be fine.. (Saves a step) Type exit after all are done and try rebooting from the hard drive.. Good luck!..

(If It does not work change the hard drive)..
