I am assuming you mean the drain pipe for the washer pipe to go in to. It should be a minimum of 1 and a half inches, it does not matter if it is larger than this, but it must be no less.
Plz rate my solution.

If the load size is set anywhere at or above large, the machine keeps filling until it gets to a certain point and then continues to fill while draining at the same time.

The water is syphoning out the drain. Make sure the drain hose is not sealed to the drain stand pipe it drains into, and make sure the top of the drain stand pipe is higher than the washers tub. Try to extend it with a coupling and a peice of pipe up to 36 inches.

Dimension size for the ducting.

If you want the drain to be ducted the measurement is about the size needed for the drain pipe. Normally a duct with an OD- outer diameter -of about 3 inches should be sufficient to plug in the drain hose .
Make sure your drain hose fits into the duct as you can buy one with the drain hose taken out to sample.

I have an old home that has a very space drain pipe. I bought a new Maytag top load washing machine. The drain pipe is too large for the drain pipe. 2 plumbers have told me the drain pipe will have to...

Whirlpool now own Maytag and with a W/P top load machine there is an adaptor which reduces the diameter of the drain hose. Not knowing the diameters of your drain hose, or the plumbing of your house, I can't say for sure that this is a remedy. However it's worth trying. Contact a Whirlpool stockist and see if the adaptor is the correct size for your new Maytag. Or you may be able to drain the new machine into a laundry tub which then flows into the house drain. This is a normal way of 'taking up the slack'.
I'm surprised your plumbers didn't suggest it.
Good luck Nomess

Drain hose is split - is it easy to replace or do I need an engineer?

so easy you will kick yourself. Tilt machine sideways and follow the pipe to where it connects to the drain pump. Remove the clamp and pull the pipe off. Once off, order a new one from an appliance shop. Its not imperrative if you put a pipe on from another machine but make sure the pipe end size is the same.(it must not be loose or the water will pour out when pumping)

Water seeping back in washer after load is done?

Very possible your household drain pipe is almost the same size as the washers drain pipe. The house hold pipe should be approximately twice the diameter so as to allow equalising air in while water is being expelled from the washer. If at any time there is water flowback, it wont be forced into the washer pipe as it will now have an air gap.

Can't hold water

There is no drain valve.
Pull the drain hose up out of the drain pipe until there is only about 6" inside the pipe. Make sure there is a gap around the hose where it goes into the pipe so air can get in.
Make sure the drain pipe is higher than the water level in the tub.
