You probably have Indexing turned on or AVirus scan running (or someone is on your box remotely....)

Something or someone is tying up the drive.

Turn off indexing: Rt click Drive, Properties, and UNCheck 'Allow windows (or indexing service) to index this drive

Stop the AVir Scan:
RtClick AVIRus icon in taskbar, click stop - or Press CNTL-ALT-DEL, processes, locate your AVir proggie, Rt click and select end process tree

Windows xp sp3 stop error message 7e usb

Why not just pull it out instead of clicking on safely remove hardware? Try it and see if it works. Sounds like your usb drive is not windows 7 compatible. Or windows 7 has some driver issue which is not uncommon.

Make sure you have all programs and folders closed. Then try stopping usb mass storage, there should be more then one option so try removing the drive itself on the list. If that doesn't work. I myself would probably just restart the computer. Then try again.

Safely Remove Hardware

Sometimes this can happen with Generic Drivers.

Make sure you installed any drivers that came with the device, and if they didn't come with any try going to the Manufactures website and downloading the drivers.
