You might be able to verify by taking a fairly bright flashlight and aiminig across your screen when it does shut off. If you can see the image, it's probably the inverter.

If you've tried an external monitor and it does the same thing, it's probably the video card (hopefully yours is the replaceable kind.)

Six screws on the bezel and carefully pop it off. The inverter is on the bottom of the screen. I just replaced a broken screen on that exact model.

I think I need to replace the video card on my Dell Inspirion 6000. Is this possible without huge expense. I am not 100% sure replacing the video card will make the laptop work but the screen is blank and...

If the system has ATI Video, then there is a discrete video card that can be replaced. If the video is Intel Integrated, then you will need to replace the motherboard.

Video cards available on Ebay

Dell inspiron 6400 start up problem.

Can you hear the hard drive spinning and the computer appears to be running but you you get a blank screen. If you look at the LCD screen at an acute angle and you see a dim image. then you have a backlight problem. To determine if you have a video card problem or a lcd screen problem, Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first and then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.
Get back to me with the results of these tests and any error messages etc. so I can advise you.

Dell Inspiron 9400 display goes blank after a few minutes

If the issue occurs in the safe mode, then I'm suspecting a failure of the LCD backlight. (It warms up and quits) Also see if video stays on using an external monitor. If it does, then the LCD is most likely failing.

If video goes out on an external monitor as well, then the Video card is failing due to overheating. Make sure all vents are free of dust (Clean with canned compressed air) and the all fans are functional (Run the fan test in diagnostics) If fans check up, then video card is failure point. If fans fail diags, replace affected fan 1st

Black screen

there three issues with think pads that are common for this issue

1 bad inverter board
2 bad ccfl lamp in the lcd screen
3 bad video chip or other issue on the mother board

Inverters are not hard to replace and can be done by most people with patience and soft touch
ccfl bulbs require service techs with specialized skills to replace them, the lcd has to e taken apart or completely replaced
motherboards or video cards are much more complex issues and need service centers or techs with the requisite skills

Display

the moment you power on your system strat tapping F2 key
you will get a system setup screen if you dont get it as suggested before connect an extrnel monitor then press and hold Fn key and while holding it down press F8 it will toggle the display
if you get a video on external monitor LCD needs to be replaced
if you don't then its either systemboard(if video card is integrated)
or the video card
provide me your system's service tag located at the bottom pannel of your system, turn it upside down you will find a bar coded sticker which has a 7 digit alphanumeric number
i will be able to provide the best resolution
