Can not connect to internet using wireless

I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 and now connect to the internet via an ethernet cable attached to a Gateway 2 wire router, provided by AT&T. I cannot connect to the internet wirelessly and the router provider is less than helpful. My computer has a Dell PC card. I was told that the Dell wireless program is overriding AT&T this has since been disabled still no luck.

Any suggestions??

Did you input the WEP key? I will assume you are using Windows XP. So go to control panel, network connections and then go to the wireless connection and then select view wireless connections double click on the one with the highest strength, which should be your 2wire. When it asks for the network security key type in the numbers that are located on the sticker on the bottom of your router between the [########] brackets.

To have an overview try this Tip
Dell Wlan program is supposed to manage the PC WLAN card.
An eventually installed ATT program is supposed to be used ONLY to configure ONCE your ATT router.
If you have an ATT router control program is can be to dialog and config Router NOT to configure your Dell WLAN card.

  1. Configure your router in Wireless section: remove security to check your WLAN. Set a new Wlan name (= SSID) to be able to find your network between other neiborghs networks.
  2. Be sure to use same standard both for router and PC card (A, B, G, N)
  3. Confi gure your PC WLAN card: if you have to use a proprietary driver disable Zero wireless configuration set in WLan Properties and launch wlan card associated program.leave your network open
  4. View Wireless network using your PC card monitor SW and find your network (SSIC) connect
  5. If you can connect to open wlan you can proceed to configure router for an encrypted and protected network.
  6. use WPA-PSK security protocol
  7. replicate same settings on PC WLAN card and recheck connection.

Can I disable wireless and connect with ethernet cord and modem, for work do not want remove wireless cord, in the day want to be able to use my wireless.

Are you talking about direct-connecting via Ethernet to a cable or DSL modem? You shouldn't have to disable wireless to do that. If the cable modem has an open Ethernet port, you should be able to run a straight-thru Ethernet Cat-5 cable between that port and the Ethernet port on your laptop. The laptop should recognize that it is connected to the modem through the direct connection. Check the manual for the cable modem or information supplied by your ISP for connection details. You may have to do some setup on the modem to get an Internet connection, like having your ISP 'activate' the modem. Just be sure your Ethernet cable is a straight-thru, standard Ethernet cable, and not a 'cross-over' cable such as is used to transfer data between two computers.

Dell inspiron 1525 not connecting to internet

Hi,

I am one of the Dell Certified System Expert.

For internet connection, there are two ways to connect to the internet. One is through wired connection (connecting LAN cable) and connecting to wireless connection (through wireless router or through wireless Modem WLAN).

For wireless check the switch located on the left side of the portable after switching check the status light located at the front left of the computer.

check the driver if it is properly installed meaning no bang(!) or question mark(?) for both ethernet (LAN port) and Wireless Device.

To check the driver go to control panel then device manager. Check the network and you should be seeing the ethernet and wireless device. If not installed use the driver cd that came with the computer.

How to check the internet connection.
For Wired connection:
First check the cable, check the LAN port in the computer there should be blinking lights, if none try to reseat the cable. Check the ipaddress of the computer and the default gateway.

This is the instruction to get the IP address and default gateway.

For windows xp
1. Click start, then choose run then on the box type CMD then click ok.
2. on the black screen type ipconfig. get the ip address and default gateway.
3. normally it will give you 192.168.XXX.XXX
4. try to type ping 192.168.XXX.XXX (this should be the gateway)
5. If you receive replies, then you are connected to the router/modem
6. then try to ping www.yahoo.com
7. if still reply then you are connected to the internet already, might be your issue is browser or security on the computer.

For vista and Windows 7
click windows then in the start search type cmd, you should be seeing cmd on the top, right click then choose run as administrator. then follow steps 2-7 above.

For wireless connection
Check the switch, and the status light, if all are checked checked the ip address and default gateway as well, the instruction is the same above.

For more information about setting up your system please refer to the link.

Hello,

After subscribing to an Internet Service Provider, you can connect via modem with the Ethernet cable, USB cable or wireless if the modem support this. Check with you ISP to find out which is recommended for your modem.

Hi. If Dell is correct, then yes, it would be expensive. Your other alternative is to buy a PCMCIA Ethernet Card. They range from about $20 to $40. Or, you could go with what you suggested and do wireless via a wireless router.
