when you first bought the heater even if it wasnt "red" as you say did you get heat from it? now those type of heaters are good when they work. First the heater has 2 settings say low and high now in low the wattage will turn some of the elements partly red the reason you dont see it is because it is fan forced heat on those type heaters which causes the elements to look like they are not red but they are on, only low will do this. Now high will cause all elements to get "red" even while the fan is running. If there is no heat someone needs to bypass switch to see if they work.process of iliminitation.Hope this helps for you.
Are you talking about a heat pump? Is the compressor and fan running in the outside unit? What is the outside temp? If the compressor is not running it could be a bad capacitor or bad compressor. If the lines are icing up it could be a low charge.
One of two things here. You blew an internal fuse or the heating element is broken. Take your unit apart and check for bad fuses and also check that the heating coil has continuity. Let me know how you make out.
Well you have a good transformer and the fuse is not blown. So I would look for the most obvious thing which is the relay. Why the relay? Well most units do double duty as air conditioner and heater. AC and heat require different fan speeds. The relay shifts the fan from low to high for ac. The fan runs on low for heat. In rare instances it could be a bad wall thermostat but most times not. You know the fan is good because you can get it to come on manually.
Some programmable thermostats have a circulate feature. This feature will allow your fan to run approx. 20 minutes per hour. This will insure better circulation, a better balanced temperature throughout the home & better air quality do to more air filtration. Read your thermostat manual to see if your thermostat has this feature and how to turn it off if needed. Another possibility would be on an older furnace with a fan limit control. If the temperature settings are set to low on the fan limit (or if the control is malfunctioning) you could experience a fan that runs a lot even if the thermostat is off.
