Question about Ingersoll Rand - Rand Type - 30 Reciprocating Air Compressor - 5 Hp, 230 Volt 1 Phase, Model - 2340L5

3 Answers

Starting problems How can you check if the capacitors are good in te starting circuit of the motor? I have Ingersoll rand compressor model 2340. 30T. It trips the breaker when it try's to start. If i can get the breaker to hold past the start it runs just fine. So I think the problem is in the start capacitors. my question is how do you check them, and if they are bad where can I get replacements?

IF YOUR PRETTY SURE DRAW A CAPACITOR WIRING DIAGRAM AND THEN TAKE YOUR CAPACITORS TO ANY MOTOR SHOP OR SUPPLY HOUSE LIKE WW GRAINGER. THEY CAN CHECK THE MICROFARRADS OR UNIFARRADS OF YOUR CAPACITORS. YOUR START CAPACITORS HAVE THE LARGER MF OR UF RATING AND ARE TYPICALLY LARGER IN SIZE. YOUR P.O.S. INGERSOL RAND MAY EVEN BE A 3500 RPM MOTOR AND COULD HAVE UP TO 5 CAPACITORS. 3 OF WHICH ARE START. IS YOUR WIRE LARGE ENOUGH? IS YOUR BREAKER LARGE ENOUGH? IS YOUR COMPRESSOR UNLOADING THE HEAD PRESSURE WHEN IT CUTS OFF? IS IT OUTSIDE AND TOO COLD IN THE MORNINGS? MAKE SURE YOUR WIRING IS LARGE ENOUGH BECAUSE THAT IS USUALLY THE PROBLEM. YOU HAVE SINGLE PHASE BUT IS YOUR VOLTAGE CORRECT 208V OR 230 V. ALL WIRING AND GAUGING CHARTS ARE BASED ON 100 FT OF WIRE . MOST COMPRESSORS PULL 3 TIMES THE AMP RATING ON INITIAL STARTUP THEN COM DOWN TO AMPS LISTED ON THE MOTOR.

A couple of months ago my compressor would trip the breaker...It would whine a bit and then trip. My buddy is an electrician and checked it out; he couldn't tell if it was the cap or not but sent me to Graingers to buy one; they are only around $8 or so... to me it was a cheap fix to try...it worked!

Why does a 7.5 HP Ingersoll Rand motor draw 200 amp at start up?

Sounds like the start capacitor is bad and is not giving it the intial "jump" it needs

3 Phase 7.5 HP air compressor overheat, runs on and off, we found it has no capacitor, what is the correct capacitor needed.

There could be several reasons why your unit is "overheating". Is the motor tripping the circuit breaker ? Is it the motor or the compressor that is overheating? I need more description of the problem. 3 phase motors do not have capacitors. Is the compressor turning the correct direction? Is the supply voltage correct? Is the power cable the correct size? Do you have the correct type and quantity of oil in the compressor?

Please check out the Web Site Below. It is a Quick Start manual for IR Compressors.

It should have everything you need. It DOES NOT Show you any wiring connections AT the motor.

Older t 30 won't start

I believe your capacitor or capacitors are going out. Or one of the three phases has popped a fuse.

If there is a fuse box for the unit, shut off the breakers on the wall to the unit and do a continuity test across each fuse.

If nothing is found, remove all motor capacitors and bring them into you local electric motor repair shop. Usually they will check capacitors for free.

This should do it.
