Re: netgear router dg834gt

Have look in the router settings for the actual internet connection speeds, as these are a more true reading than the speed check as the speeds can vary at different times of the day and 2 or 3 speed checks can bring different results. your actual connection speed that is showing in the routers settings is the connection you are getting from your ISP. If you are with BT they usually recommend using their latest routers, why i'm not sure, as the only thing i have noted is that the MTU is set at 1500 (Maximum Transmition Units)and in other routers the MTU is automatically set at 1493, so look for the MTU setting and up it if necassary, but not above 1500, also double check all the settings, even put the bt router back in and see if speeds improve, if, you know the BT router is set up purposly for faster connection speeds. Also try checking your speed at a speed test site at a quieter time of day, you will also see different speed check sites give you different speed results.

How do I disable my DG834GT router firewall?

The router firewall only blocks connections coming from the internet.

Basically it only lets an outside IP connect to your network if you establish the connectoin FIRST.

The most common cause of not being able to see another PC on the LAN is not having the same workgroup name.

Go to Start > My Computer , right click > Properties > Computer name. Make sure all PCs have the same workgroup name.

Connecting to

You need to use the desktop computer to access the Netgear page. Check the default gateway address of your desktop (this is the IP address of your Netgear). You may follow these steps if you don't know how to check the IP address of your desktop:

1. Go to the Command prompt or DOS prompt. Type in ipconfig and press enter. Check the Default Gateway address.

Netgear DG834GT

You will have to set the MTU to 1500, that speed is not enough, if you are getting only 416Kbps downstream, then it's not right, either the router is at fault or your isp, understandably you are on 8mbits but you need to do a line speed check at BT web site and see what you should be getting in theory, as you may be far away from the exchange. The MTU of 1500 may not up it to what is should be, i think you need to check your line filters and get a line check done as 416 mbps is unacceptable.
