Thanks, I tried that. I think it's the hard drive. I gotta get a file off, but I can't get the hard drive read by another computer. It knows it's there but it can't find any files.

I bought a device to allow me to hook my drive to another computer. I used My Computer and saw that the D: drive was showing up. I clicked on the D Drive icon and it came up with an error message saying that the D Drive didn't exist, The device I bought had a power light and looked like it was activating and trying to read the drive when I clicked on the the icon.

What would make an hp laptop w/windows vista not turn on ,even tho its fully charged

So many things. Does it turn on at all or it just won't boot into Windows? If it doesn't turn on at all, remove the battery and run straight from the power cord. Make sure you are getting power to the computer.If you are getting power and the system turns on, but won't boot into Windows, trying booting into safe mode or using a recovery disk to start at a command shell. Remove the hiberfil.sys file and try to restart. The hiberfil.sys is a hidden system file so you'll need to use the following commands;
attrib -r -s -a -h hiberfil.sys
del hiberfil.sys

Try that. I just fixed a laptop last week and I had to delete the hibernation file in order to get the laptop to boot.

I have a lifebook a6110 no boot up, scroll lock blinking. Fans working constantly. hard drive seems to work but it stops.

well if u r saying that after working for a while, the process competely stops, then there's a boot file that is missing. I dont know the name of that file but i've solved such probem previously.
U need to repair ur system using the Installation disk.
Just enter the installation disk, and start ur computer/Laptop.
Now select Boot From CD/DVD rom
let windows load its few files, and select repair
This will restore all the files that r required for booting up ur system
Hope this helps u out, and if it doesn't let me know it, i'll surely sove it out.
If u like my post, please rate me up, i really need some good ratings.

File header checksum does not match computed one. ???

You have one or more critical corrupted file/s which prevents the laptop from booting up.
To get the laptop operating again, you need to insert the Windows Vista CD and do a Repair and if this fails you need to install Vista again.

Install Windows xp off USB

If you are only trying to boot to windows then you'll need files NTLDR, Boot.ini, NTDETECT.COM, and NTOSKRNL.EXE on the USB drive. This will boot you to the windows screen. Trick is to get those files off of your windows CD onto your USB...then copy those over to the c:\ and that should also take care of boot problems if it was because of corrupted files.

My laptop wont boot

How long does the screen display that quote? Sometimes Linux will lock up completely at boot, but usually it will give a message such as "kernal panic" if it does; in your case, if the GRUB boot-loader is failing to find a kernal to boot, you may not have a valid boot-loader configuration file or installed operating system. Or, you may just need patience.
I suggest you try booting from a Live distro disc, such as Ubuntu (DVD), SuSE (DVD), or Damn Small Linux (this is probably the fastest, at only 50 MB) or DSL's Not Damn Small Linux (CD) which still has pretty minimal hardware requirements but includes more tools. Even DSL should let you view the files on your laptop's hard-disk drive and edit configuration files if there are issues.
