Question about Toshiba 57HDX82 57" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Grainy picture I have a Toshiba rear proj. t.v The picture is grainy and i cant get a d.v.d player or any game console to work. The t.v is about 5 yrs. old and never had a problem before. When any of the above are turned on i get a blur for a picture.I was told that maybe the tuner needs to be replaced. If this is true is it hard to replace or is it something that can be unplugged and put back in.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, some ideas you may want to try/consider:

  • other than the TV, all switched off and unplug. Try evaluating the reception of any/all TV channels;
  • if quality is bad, either the tuner (least likely) is bad or a problem with your cable system/provider;
  • if the quality is good, then either the DVD or the game console has an RF modulator that interferes with the Toshiba's reception;
  • if the grainy picture is when using the Audio/Video inputs, then it would not be the tuner but rather the video processor;
  • should the tuner really require replacement, it would be relatively easy since it is a single block/assembly with a couple of pins and a mini coaxial connector;
  • best approach would be to reference a Service Manual. Pls bear in mind that voltage check requires the unit to be powered on and therefore exposes you to potential electrical hazard.
Check and perform preliminary visual or necessary inspection. Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

N64 colors do not work when hooked up to Vizio TV.

You probably have the RCAs in the component video hookups. Its easy to confuse them as they are similar ports. They are usually red, blue, and green. Look for the yellow, white, and red hookups. Those are for RCA connections as they don't work in the component hookups for HD video. i.e. blue-ray, PS3 That will cause the video to look grey and grainy.

1 red ring has appeared, game play grainy

This means that you have either played it so much, that the circuits inside the xbox have been damaged. Luckily, you didn't get 3-4 rings, which means it is unable to play. So i suggest to go to Game stop for repairs. I'm just giving a suggestion.

Random Grainy Picture on TV setting

Unfortunately you are correct, that is a sign that the xbox360 itself is on it's way out. Make sure it is as well ventilated as possible. You may want to call xbox support 800-4-My-Xbox and tell them you have a RROD just so they will work with you on getting a replacement quickly.

Grainy bdmv platyback

You have a couple of options.
1. Turn down the sharpness on your TV. Too much is overkill, anyway.
2. Whilst watching any movie, hit the triangle button for the movie settings & options. Turn up the noise reduction to +3, also the "mosquito" noise to +3.
These should give you a less grainy picture. Enjoy!

Toshiba 52" REGZA has a grainy picture

There is no easy (read: cheap) solution for this. Especially because your TV is so big, the only thing that will look good on it is something that plays at the very least 720p HD output.

I don't know what your DVD player model is, but you want an upconverting DVD player, and even then, the quality will not be full HD. The only thing that is full 1080p HD on the market today is Blu-Ray, and game consoles like XBox 360 and PS3.

As for the sports, it depends on the TV you bought. If the deal was too good to be true for a 52" TV, you probably got one with a low Hz, or a high refresh rate. This means that the images played don't update quick enough for high motion video like action movies and sports, which is why it's blurry. Mine has a 3ms response time, by comparison.

Hope this helps, please rate me.

Picture clear, then "grainy" can hit TV and will clear up

sounds like a cold solder joint in the tuner circuitry. Unless you can do it yourself it's probably not going to be worth the repair bill.

Not able to select HD on my Wii setup screen

Well see if it happens again, it may have been a one time thing. but try reconnecting the AV cables to the tv or change the picture settings on the wii setup options.
But this is important, is the picture grainy, or is there vertical black lines? if its black lines, i have the same problem and the only way to fix it is to send it to nintendo and theyll give u a new console. its due to overheating and the graphics card gets fried

In-game grainy screen.

this sounds like more a t.v. problem you should post a thread in that section and maybe you will get a solution because alot of the game console experts may not have alot of experience with t.v.s your problem sounds like it is not involved with your 360 console
