Dryer drum making thumping noise

The dryer has started making a noise like there are tennis shoes in it, there is nothing in the dryer to cause this sound. I ran it without anything in it and it still makes the same noise. The dryer is not moving, rocking or bumping against anything. I do not see anything that would say there is a problem, just the noise.

Dries fine, but hideous thumping noise when it is rotating. Just like tennis shoes in it.

My dryer just started making this noise. So I opened the back up to try to figure out what it might be, and when I opened it I saw something. It was part of the belt that drives the dryer. There are grooves vulcanized to the belt, and a small section of grooves or cogs I think is what they are called had come apart from the belt and what laying there on the floor of the dryer. But I ran it and timed the thumps in my head to get it to stop right on the "thump". Sure enough there was a small 1/2'' appx. of belt Cog missing, so the "thump" came from when the belt came around to the motor and the pulley hit a divit in the belt, "thump". So needless to say I need to replace the belt soon before it breaks completely. I figure that it looks like someone may benefit from knowing what the noise is. Now its off to find the proper belt and look up how to change those things...Good luck to those reading this.

I just replaced the motor on my dryer and figured it wouldn't hurt to order a new belt as well. When I disassembled it, I inspected the old belt and there were two flat spots on it. With the new motor and belt, it works like new and is 10x quieter than before! Thanks for the tips!

I described the exact same thing to LG support, they were no help so i took it apart. I found that the drum is cracked at the seam where it's welded, right at the edge where the two wheels in the back of the dryer hit the crack and it makes the klunk. I actually saw where someone had stated this and chose to ignore it because it didn't seem to make sense until i took it apart and saw it for myselfe. Sorry dryer belt guy, i think if you have an LG you might be suffering the with the rest of us. it sounds like they have a manufacturing defect their not willing to deal with. mine lasted a year and a half, got the part from Sears for less than a hundred bucks. good luck.

Had same situation with the drum "thumping" even without anything in it. Noticed the drum came apart at the seam in the back every time it went around at a certain point. Called LG to let them know....THEY HAVE A LIFETIME WARRANTY ON THE DRUM! I have had the dryer for 4 years - purchased from Home Depot. I had to fax my receipt (I keep everything filed, so I had it)They sent someone out to replace it - no charge! Must say I was scared after reading all of the problems, but very pleasantly surprised by the customer service. He also helped me with my washer that was leaking....user error - lack of running the cleaning cycle for 4 years ----

Lucky! I, stupidly, bought a Samsung and it has developed the same problem, two years after I paid a lot for it, but it only had a one-year warranty. Won't buy their appliances again!!

I have the same thumping noise and it is a cracked drum. Exactly as wspringer1 described above. I will never buy LG products!!! My french door refrigerator developed electrical issued after 14 months. No help from LG. It was also advertised at Energy Star and is not. Class action suit that they settled. I also have a $450 LG microwave that is not as a $100 GE and a $900 dishwasher that doesn't clean dishes as well as my 10 year old kitchen-aid did.

Beware of all LG products. They look great, but don't perform well.

I seem to have the same problem, very loud noise when Drum turning like shoes in drum, seems loose and not turning smooth and even. I will open it up and see if it is any of these problems descibed. I think there is a roller as well that could be bad.
I will NEVER buy LG again, so far my warsher went bad with in 2 years, now dryer, 42" TV, and my Microwave.

Without a model number all I can do is pass you a generic response. There are 2 sizes of repair kits that include drum rollers (Flat spots on yours) a belt and a drum felt. 27 inch and 29 inch. Having said that... the drum rollers are what are causing your thumping noise. PN: 303373
I would also replace the belt: 31531589 the drum glides 306508 and the drum seals Multi-listing here: http://www.repairclinic.com/Maytag-Dryer-Gasket-Or-Seal-Parts?z=50 also inspect the idler pulley and bearing. Not sure how old your dryer is but by doing the above you should get more than 5 years good service out of your dryer. It is worth the time effort and expense to repair it.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

do you hear like a click noise, it may have tripped your overload switch, it is located on the motor on the inside of the dryer. You will need to pull the front panel off and investigate. the screws on the inside of the door, pry up on the top corners, remove panel carefully as the door switch is connected to it, lift top lid back 90 degrees, look at belt, should be centered on drum and should be able to rotate drum with some resistance. there are two switches on the motor on resets the other trips, the rest will click when reset. Good Luck Tim

The belt probably broke, and coincidentally happened while drying the shoes. The belt is easy to replace. Open the back and you'll probably see the belt laying on the bottom

HI sounds to me like your drum support is worn, it would make a thumping sound. You have 2 you should replace them both.
If you are needing a part - call this toll free number 1 877-489-5610, I have used them many times, they are the best. Best of all overnight shipping!

LG DLE3777W dryer thumps when running . It sounds like there are tennis shoes in the drum.

Probable cause is the bearing on the wheel that turns the drum is worn out. They are easy to replace and should cost less than $25. for the part.
Remove the front of the dryer and turn the drum by hand, you should be able to tell which side is worn.
Be sure and unplug first.

Thumping noise in atlantis dryer after drying heavy mattress pad

Have you husband do a visual inspection of the drum and literally feel it to see if anything is caught or stuck on the drum. The motor also may have something caught in it as well. This would be the motor that turns the drum.

Loud thumping sound

It's probably time for new drum support rollers. There are two rollers the drum rides on and their bearings can fail, which makes them noisy and also makes the drum wobbly while it turns. Replacing the rollers isn't difficult, and you can do it yourself if you feel comfortable working with hand tools and are patient.

Here's a good site with information on belt replacement and other repair tips, and a source for parts:

LG ELECTRIC DRYER

Henry, its going to be 1 of 2 things. Check inside your drum, see if the vent in the rear has burning or discoloration around it. If it does, it sounds as if your vent is restricted causing the unit to overheat, so clean/fix/replace the venting and your support pulleys will need to be repalce ie flat spots from overheat. If there is no scoarching marks and you know its not the vent or heat issue, the drum seam may have parted causing the thump as every revolution is made.
