Question about Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop

Sound Is Skipping

I have reinstalled all my codec's, my soundcard (SoundMAX), my WMP and every song even on the internet sound is skipping like a scratched cd! I have tried iTunes, VLC player and it still skips! Not sure what else to do! Can someone help?
Sound skips on start-up sound and any tone or sound that comes through the speakers. I have had the cpu in for repair of this problem and I was told it was a virus. I purchased Webroot following servicing/cleaning on the advice of the tech. The sound skip problem has returned even though I have been diligent about running Webroot. I have visited the dell site for updated driver... still no improvement. Help.

Windows XP is what came on the computer from Dell. Programs have been added since I received it, however, when the tech guy at my local repair shop serviced/cleaned the CPU all those programs were already on the machine. Following the service I referred to in my previous post, the problem with the sound skipping had stopped, only to return two months later. Thanks for reading and your reply.

Sounds like a plan cpenzes.... what do I have to lose? I've been asked about the sound card by others off line, but since I've tried everything else, I'll give it a shot. Thanks again for your help... I'll get my oldest son to assist me on this one....

Thanks again... that's my concern, whether or not it is a separate sound card. I'll get back to you after my 24 yo son and I take a look.

Have you tried shutting down removing the soundcard restarting

then remove the driver from my computer properties hardware then devices

write down your driver then shutting down again to put the card back in.

    then start up again.

If this does'nt fix your problem then i think you need a new soundcard

Let me know if that helped at all

honestly it may just be a matter of a new card

if it's a card you can't just remove then I would just uninstall it from my computer properties restart and see what happens

even if it's not seperate you can uninstall or disable it through my computer devices

then if you have to get a new one your son get just add the new one in the tower

but then the old would need disabled

OH, I'M JUST KIDDIN'!

You didn't state the Operating System you are using, so I am going to use Windows XP Home Edition for an example,

Now is that for a Soundmax? Dunno.

Do know you can look the model number up on the soundcard, if it is a SoundMax soundcard, go to SoundMax support, and download the drivers.

I can tell you how to step by step download AND install, the drivers on the HP Support page; or the drivers from the SoundMax page.

I bought a used GX520 and the volume does not work. There is no volume icon on the lower right corner. Under sounds and audio devices it says ''no audio device'', and I can't change anything. I own another...

sounds like ( no pun intended) your missing the audio drivers or controllers--right-click on MY COMPUTER then PROPERTIES then HARDWARE then DEVICE MANAGER and check if there are any yellow or red "X"s next to anything (you sound driver) right click and select update driver (you need to be connected to the internet)

No soundmax audio present.

I need to ask. Do you have two speakers showing? One fat red one and one gray one as you usually see on computers everywhere?
Try this either way.
Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Volume Control and make sure you don't have a check mark in your Master Volume control found on the far left.
Are you using a Desktop or laptop?

if you are using the PC's motherboard sound I would upgrade to a soundcard. they are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. www.pricewatch.com

Playback on audio cd's sounds bad. Sounds scratchy.

I would always install the driver first , especially if they have an updated version since your last install. also might check if there is a direct connect line attches from the back of the cd rom to the soundcard or motherboard. sound newer motherboards handle sound better without these.

Sound Is Skipping

i'm still thinking memory issues.... quick fix would be to unplug the memory module and then plug it in again.... it may have come unseated..... please make sure the power is off before you do that.
