When I replay my messages, the voices are so garbled that I cannot understand the message left by the caller

Is the OGM distorted on the callers phone or on the same speaker the incoming messages are heard?
If it's just the speaker, then the speaker itself or the amplifier drving the speaker is defective.
If the OGM is distorted for callers, then the signal processing before the amplifiers is defective.
More than likely it's a replace not a fix. The speaker unit itself will be very difficult to source. Maybe a very well stocked Radio Shack. Any electronics will likely be in a (custom?) integrated circuit.

Make sure answer machine function is turned on. Bottom right button.
Make sure an outgoing message is set. Should see a <-> arrow in the display screen. If not, press the <-> button. To record outgoing message... the press the middle button; record out going message; press middle button. Wait a few seconds and you should be set. Hope this helps

You have the answering machine set to announce only.
Press the menu button repeatedly until you hear the phone say "set announce only" Press the change button twice The first time tells you the current setting which is "on" the second time turns it off.

Usually answered in minutes!
My dad and I both bought our sets within a month of each other.I got the two base set and he got the three bases. About a month after purchasing them, the incoming messages are static and not understandable. The outgoing message is fine and if you stand and listen, the incoming call is all messed up! At first we thought it was just some ironic thing, after reading a few other websites, we are not alone! You can't even tell who is speaking, let alone what they are saying. If this is a problem of Vtech phones, I will never purchase again! We got ours at Wal-Mart. Not worth it! I am very disappointed!
