Screeching and crackling sounds emitted by modem as I log on

For months I've had a persistent crackling sound coming from the modem as I attempted to log on making it difficult to get a high enough kbps ratio. I'm on dial-up and thought it might be the telephone line. Had the line checked, it wasn't. This went on for months. Then 2 days ago had a loud screeching sound followed by a freezing of the attempt to log on. I had to shut down the computer manually using the off-on button. This was the beginning of the cursor freezing and multiple crashes as I attempted to log on, off, or as I tried to work online. I tried downloading another modem driver which only speeded up the computer somewhat. I tried running a System Restore (I have Windows XP Professional) which did nothing to alleviate the problem. I think I may need a new modem. If anyone has a diagnosis and a solution to the problem I'm having would appreciate your input. The modem I have is a Conexant HSF V92 56K PCI Modem. If it is the modem, where's the best place to get them? Thanks. JO

This is one place to start looking. Good prices. Usually when modems start acting up, it's less of a headache to just replace it.

Fan seems to always be running and when it gets hot it starts making a screeching vacuum like sound

Try blowing out with canned air. It really helps. My PC sounds like engine if I don' t blow out every 6 months or so.

My new gateway laptop makes screeching sounds when I go near frame?

Maybe it does not want to hit the wall, LOL screeching sounds come from a moving part if you think about it. Could be a fan that when overworked may be in need of cleaning or replacement. "Interesting"

Computer emits soft high-pitched sound when plugged in. What's wrong?

It very well could be your hard drive getting ready to go bad...could be months or years, or it is the fan to cool the processor. Identify where the sound is coming from. If it's coming from where the vent is it's you processor big deal to replace. If it's your hard drive, start backing it up now and start moving everything off that is confidential. Once crashed and disposed of, your information is still accessible. Once you have backed up everything on your hard drive, try formatting the hard drive and reloading a fresh copy of windows on it. I did this several times on hard drives that were for sure going to die and they were all better after a format.

Power cord doesn't work and crackles

STOP using it immediately, throw it away and replace it. You can buy a replacement from the manufactures website or go to BestBuy and buy a universal one. Be prepared to spend about $90, unless you can buy one on ebay. just look at the big black box on the power cord and WRITE DOWN THE VOLTAGE AND AMPS listed there. make sure the new one matches exactly.

Distorted/crackling sound that interupts sound on laptop

Sounds like a blown speaker. If you wan to test the sound card try using external speakers. If you still get the crackling sound then it's your sound card. Hard to fix in a laptop.

Dell studio 1737 speakers crackle and pop.

My best guess is, if they crackle with the speakers but not the headfones,  then replace the speakers. Must be a lose wire or something of that nature.
