Question about Lexmark Wheelwriter 1000 Typewriter

3 Answers

I have a wheelwriter that won't type some punctuation (comma, period). I've changed the ribbon and tried different printwheels. Nothing solves the problem. Any suggestions?

I can't locate the solenoid cap on the typewriter to see if it has disintegrated and possibly causing the typewriter to only type the top half of each letter.

Where is the impact mechanism and how do you adjust it?

Hi Karen, Faxman is most likely correct. If you look just below and to the left side of the printwheel you may see the little solenoid pad, it is opaque or white color. It may be cracked or crumbling apart. You need to find a qualified tech to replace it. I charge about 60.00 dollars in the Clearwater Florida area.

The impact solenoid has a rubber cap that has worn down. Replacing the cap and adjusting the impact mechanism will get you back in operating order !

The WW3 will type whatever printwheel is in the machine. If you want something different you will have to buy another printwheel. It says on the printwheel whether it is a 10 pitch or a 12 pitch.

Wheelwriter 6 - Was typing and it just stopped printing. The keys repsond, the printwheel responds but doesn't move forward to make contact with the paper. The ribbons advances, the correction ribbon...

Solenoid pad is worn out. Look below left of the printwheel down inside the carriage and you should see a little white or opaque rubber pad. It needs to be replaced. You have to take it to a shop for proper repair. I have in the past, replaced it by digging the old one out with tweezers and hook. Then fish the new one in there.

Typewriter is working fine but won't type anything on the paper - new ribbon / new printwheel - no impression. Appears to be stuck on a "stencil" setting.

Put in a mulit part form, if it prints on the copies the ribbon isn't lifting, if it dosen't the plastic cap on the print solenoid needs replaced.

Characters do not print.

The print solenoid plunger has a plastic cap on the end of the plunger it is probably broken. They are available but you need a bit of mechanical ability to install.

The impact solenoid has a rubber cap on it that is worn out. This cap needs replaced and the impact mechanism adjusted.

First see if the ribbon is spacing a full space for each letter pressed if not you may be in the over strike ribbon mode, to get out of the mode press code and comma, period or slash i'm not sure which one So try them all.
If that dosen't help check to be sure the correction tape is not getting in the way, remove the corr. tape and try it.
Next remove the ribbon and release the hammer as if you were changing the P/W and see if the plunger in the solenoid is free, if not try a drop or two of WD40 on it.

Wheelwriter 3 printwheel

If you know where the print solenoid is try a few drops of oil on the front and rear of the plunger. If the pad needs replaced it can be done without removing the printer from the machine but it is tough. If you know how to remove the printer take it out, remove the printwheel, there are two screws that hold the solenoid once the dolenoid is out the installation is simple.
