I'm trying to set up a wireless printer HP Officejet 6500A Plus & it is asking me for a WEP security key. I cannot locate it. Where can I find this number?

The security key is the "password" used on your wireless router to allow your wifi laptop to get online. Sometimes this is a number (technically it's hexidecimal, so numbers and letters A through F) can be printed on the bottom of your router, but usually it is a password that you set when you first configured your wireless router.
I would refer to your router's manual on settings up wireless security as this is the topic you should be most interested in to resolve this issue.
Hope this helps!

Hi,

Did you asign a security Key for the wireless network? If so, Try without setting up one If still doesn't work then get a different router (has to be B,G,N compatible). Also, when setting up the security key make sure to choose WPA personal as an encryption methode(this one works most of the time for most older and newer laptop)

Thanks

Can't access my linksys on my laptops although I can on my desktop.

Hi ottawakids,

I see that you are having issues accessing your Linksys using your Laptops.

> First Check if the router is detected on the Laptops.

>If the Router is detected and un accessible you ill need to check if there are security settings in the Linksys Router.

>Check if the Linksys has a Network key, or check if the Router MAC address Filtering is turned ON the Router this can also prevent your laptops from accessing the Router.

>If all elsa fails try resetting the Router to defaults and start from scratch maybe some settings are incorrect, setting it to default will fix the issue of the Router not being detected.

I hope this helps.

Have a nice day.

I can't get my laptop to detect my wireless network

What is the Operating system on the laptop ?
If it is XP then in the bottom right hand corner you will find Wireless network connection ( looks like 1 computer monitor). Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is windows Vista, then in the bottom right hand corner you will find 2 computer monitor icon. Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is Windows 98/ME/2000 then use the adapter utility to connect to the wireless network.
For MAC you will see the AIRPORT icon at the top.

Check the wireless settings of the router first . Make sure that yopu have all the wireless settings of the router. If you are not sure about the settings, then open the router set up and check the settings.

Wireless connection of netgear wireless router for compaq laptop

Sometimes firewalls on your computers can cause connection issues. I had the same problem with my home network. I had norton internet security 2008 on both systems, but the firewall settings on both computers had to be adjusted to allow the computers to talk. If you have different brand firewalls on each computer, you should consider to switching one of the computers so that it matches the other.

Another thing you want to do is log into the router's web utility and check to see if the wireless settings are blocking wireless connections in some way. You also want to make sure the ssid broadcast is enabled.

Finally, you really should consider using security on your router, so wireless connections would be password protected. I suggest wpa personal.
