PXE is an error code. Can you determine which code it is. Code will look something like this PXE-E00.

I have a laptop HP pavilion dv 4000. When boot i have a message PXE-E61 Media test failure check cable PXE-M0F exiting PXE ROM

You get this message when your hard drive is gone - it's not being detected and the computer is looking for some other source to boot from. You can probably easily replace it yourself if you have the original discs handy: it's located at the bottom, right below the monitor port and the two USB ports and takes half a minute to remove. This laptop uses good old ATA/IDE hard drives of the 2.5" variety, and new ones are pretty cheap (below $.50 per gigabyte) at your local stores or on Amazon / eBay.

when the logo comes on, press the "tab" key. It should turn the logo off and show you what the computer is doing. This may help:

THIS IS FOR HP AND COMPAQ USERS (it might help others as well)
i had the same problem with my compaq preasrio v6000.
ALL U HAVE TO DO IS
1- START UP UP UR COMPUTER AND PRESS F10
2-GO TO DIAGNOSTICS
3-RUN A HARD DISK TEST
IF IT PASSES THEN YOU JUST NEED TO RE-INSTALL TO YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM
IF NOT YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR HARD DISK.

Or try this:
Go into the BIOS.. Go into the BOOT options.. and hit Shift+1 to disable the Realtek boot option.. pop in the disk you want to boot from.. and make sure you set your boot options to CD-Rom and then HDD.. and just wait.. be patient.. and the blue screen (for booting) will show up! :)

ACER 5315 IS DEAD ON BOOT UP IT DISLAYS PXE-E61:media test failure, chk cable PXE-MOF:EXITING BROADCOM PXE ROM

Sounds like it is trying to boot from network drive. Have you changed the bios boot order. If so, change it back to boot from hard drive first.

Booting problems with acer laptop - no operating system found??

Hi,

PXE (pronounce Pixie) is an agent used to boot on to the network.

It's using the DHCP protocol to localise a server where the image of the OS is located

If, for any reason, the hard drive is not seen the computer will attempt to boot on the network controller.
This can be caused if the hard drive is missing, unplugged or corrupt, or simply by not having the boot order configured correctly.

When you start your laptops, press F2 repeatedly until you enter the bios set up, navigate to the boot order and make sure that the hard drive (sometimes listed as HDD....) at the top of the list.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need anymore help.

You removed the original harddrive... Did you think that magically the computer would have your operating system on it without the original harddrive in place?

The error is telling you that there is no Operating system, The network card would be the last spot the Bios would check for a bootable link.

Put the old harrdrive back in before you hurt it more and bring the laptop and new drive to a professional to have the upgrade performed properly.
