Question about Sony KP-41T65 41" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

Convergence Problem Hi, I have a similar probleem with my Sony KP-41T15. It had a really distorted picture so I replaced the STK chips under the advice of someone. The picture has improved greatly however now I can't get the convergence in on the edges of the screen. I didn't change any resisters (which I read about after) but I don't think the chips blew again. I also read how to get into the service mode and possibly adjust it there but don't know how to navigate through it. I'm not sure where to go from here. Could the resisters be causing this problem even if the chips are ok? If not, what else can the problem be? Any help would be appreciated.

I will replace the pico fuses, there cheap anyway. As far as the service manual, I did a search on that sight and didn't come up with anything for my model. I might need some direction as to which ones they are. I don't remember what site I was on when I read about them.

Most likely cause is one of the 3.5 amp picos have blown when the old Ics failed. You can get replacement picos at the following link, and they also have the service manual which will explain how to adjust the colors through the service manual. Here is the link.

You may have a convergence problem (I will attach some typical photos).

When it does it go into menu and call up convergence grid--if lines skewed and colors mixed it is convergence. This model I think uses two of the STK-392-560 chips and both would have to be replaced if it is your problem.

I can provide more info if you find this is what you have.

Sony model #kp51ws500. Common problems for screen appearing warped

Need more details about how the screen is appearing warped.

if you have color separation and distorted image (warped, bowed, etc), then your Convergence ICs have failed. It is very common on rear projections. The solution is to replace the STK chips, check fuses and the resistors next to the STK chips. Replace as necessary and re-align via the service menu. It is about a $300 repair at a tv service center. You will need the service manual if you decide to do this yourself.

Try This:
When you notice the symptons Use this simple test to verify.
Go to the users menu on the tv.
Look for the converge option probably under setup or video setting. Converge is short for convergence to align the red and blue colors to the green color.

If you cannot move the red either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for red section.
If you cannot move the blue either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for the blue section.

If you can move both in each direction then the problem is something else.

Note if one STK chip fails, you replace both regardless.

Note: The STK chips are black about 3 inches long and will be mounted against a large aluminum heat sink (metal fins). They have about 20 pins on them. I believe they are STK392-560s in that set.

Distorted picture and color

This kind of problem occurs due to failure of convergence output ICs in Sony KP-51HW40 tv.
Replace convergence output ICs to solve tv problem.
This set uses two of the STK-392-570 IC chips for this (convergence problem)
Local tv repairman will do this job if you have no experience of electronics stuff repair.

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem as shown below. Doing so will only make things worse.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
