Look on the motherboard for all numbers, names and info. This will help ID the motherboard. Then enter info at dell support site search engine that should give you the info you need.

About windows vista updates

Sometimes one or two of the updates fail, causing all the others to fail. Try selecting only one update and install that. Was it successful? If not, try another one. If one of them is successful, you'll be able to find out which ones are causing the problems and ignore them.

Primary hard drive not found

Hi,
since you already tried removing and reseating the hdds . The problem could be the motherbaord slot. To troubleshoot the same
1. First Disconnect all hardrives and optical drives from the system
2. Go to the system setup or BIOS
  1. Turn on (or restart) your computer.

  2. When the blue DELL™ logo appears, press <F2> immediately.

If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Microsoft® Windows® desktop. Then shut down your computer and try again.

3. Hold down the ALT key and press "F"
4. Hit ESC , save changes and exit .
5. SHutdown the system
6. Reconnect the HDD IDE cable to the optical drive connector on the motherboard.
You can refer to the following motherboard diagram
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4550/techov.htm#1101668

7. Check if the hdd , is getting detected in the system setup
You can refer to the following link on how to read system setup screen

Dell Dimension E310 not booting

Unplug Motherboard completely from all power. Remove RAM and all ISA/PCI/PCI-E/AGP cards out carefully and wait like 5 minutes. Try again using only bare essentials: Video card and 1 stick of ram. Alternate RAM is possible if it doesn't work. Try a New Video Card if nothing else works... Most MB manufacturers will have a chart that has the beep codes so you can at least narrow it down if not solve it by the beeps.

All you have to do is go to the manufacturer site of your motherboard and try to find the manual that your motherbaord model has.

Im sure ASUS has its own website for supports.
