Re: What does C31:40 mean?
These errors are fixed in my experience by resetting the camera with the power on. The reset button is located (very small) on the function panel behind the LCD display. Activate with a pencil or similar. Good luck. -->

This normally indicates that you're using a lens with an aperture ring, and the ring is not locked in position. Turn the aperture ring on the lens to its smallest setting (largest f/number) and lock it if the lens has a lock. Control the aperture from the body, just as with a lens without an aperture ring.
If the lens doesn't have an aperture ring, could you reply to this post and specify what lens you do have on the D100?
Different manufacturers use different codes, as I am sure you have figured out. Most of them that I have run into E-01 means the inside and outside units are not communicating. One is without power or there is a broken or loose wire.
I figure you me f7 and f8 here is what the coad means. there is no d8 code.
This code usually means that there is a problem with the keypanel. Many times, it means the keypanel needs to be replaced.
This code usually means that the electronic control needs to be replaced.

My camera displays “bC” or “Err 99” when I try to take a picture. What does this mean? BC is an error condition in EOS film cameras, and means one of two things. It either means “battery check,” so try putting in a fresh battery, or it’s a general error condition of some type. If the battery is fine, have a look at the previous section for things to check, especially dirty lens contacts or lens compatibility problems with Sigma lenses. Error 99 is essentially the same error condition as BC, only on EOS digital cameras. The EOS D30 also had error codes 09 and 10, which are similar.
If the camera works OK, then the r7 means that you have room in your memory buffer for 7 more pictures to take ("remaining 7"). As soon as you take a new picture, it gets transferred instantly to memory compact flash memory, and again r7 will display. The instance when there is r6, r4, etc. is short lasting, that you would not notice.
Change you camera setting, let say for small size JPG, and you should see that many more files will fit in the buffer, as indicated by a larger number after the letter r.
